Research Performance, Future Directions & Strategy Prof Deborah Hodgson A/PVC (R&I): 21 February 2014
Five Key Institutional Measures of Research Productivity and Success • Income • Publications • RHD Load • RHD Completions • International Co-Authorship
Income ND Strategy 2.1; increase research funding by 50% (2012 – 2015)Australian Competitive Grants- NOI (Notification of Intent to Apply) Process to support and improve application management- Faculty Facilitated peer-review workshops and mentorship led by senior researchers. - Central Support for Fellowship Applications
Income • ND Strategy 2.1; increase research funding by 50% (2012 – 2015) • Non-ACG • Dedicated Research Development Unit established in 2013: advice to researchers with prospective industry links, particular focus on Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) and ARC Linkage Projects • - Cluster model established to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and provide a ‘one-stop shop’ for community and industry to engage with UoN • Food - Creative Industries • Global eHealth - Defence • - NI Review
This Publication, Load and Completion data is based upon the weighted numbers where as the KPI targets are based upon the actual numbers. The estimates and targets used in these graphs reflect the percentage change in the actual numbers applied to the weighted numbers.
Publications • ND Strategy 1.4; 30% increase in the number of high quality publications • Newcastle University Research Outputs (NURO) • Design and Installation of NURO led by the Research Division • This system will provide real-time data in regards to publications • Strong positive feedback received • Regular comparative data for University leadership for performance monitoring *If every academic in the University published an extra ½ per year, UoN would be competitive with the Go8.
RHD Load • ND Strategy 4.1; increase RHD load by 30% 2012 – 2015 • Top Priority of Research Division in 2014 will be to offset record Completion Numbers • Record central investment in scholarships • Initiatives will continue to promote co-funding with faculties & uptake of externally funded scholarships • Funded international students to be actively pursued and international sponsorship supported, including strategies to best leverage existing relationships with funding bodies (Indonesia, Vietnam, China & Malaysia). • ‘Engaged PhD’ Program to improve graduate attributes by embedding additional training and linkages with industry, professional bodies and other partners. The ‘Engaged PhD’ will distinguish the UoN PhD from competitors and serve as a recruitment tool
RHD Completions • ND Strategy 4.2; Boost RHD completions to 20% of load • Continue to target ‘out of time’ students • Students who have exceeded the four year (PhD) candidature time frame. Focus on: • Providing completion seminars • Intensive supervision and mentoring • For all students • Increased supervisor training • Improved pre-confirmation programs • Renewed emphasis on progress monitoring process
RHD Completions • Epigeum Supervisor Training Module • Supervision is believed to be the single most important factor in supporting doctoral students to successfully complete their studies (Postgraduate Research Student Survey 2011) • Supervising Doctoral Studies is a world class online/blended course program to help train researchers in contemporary best practice for supervising doctoral candidates. The course programme will form a flexible professional development framework for doctoral supervisors. • 14 UK and Australian Universities involved and negotiations in progress for others to join. Epigeum has an established track record for forming successful partnerships • Foundation membership of the supervisor training program provides the opportunity to contribute to development of course curriculum and peer review scripts • Campus wide licence in perpetuity for the courses including free updates for 5 years
Priority Research Centre Advisory Committee • Incentive based funding from 2015 • KPI setting and performance monitoring • Reduction in administrative burden (exception based reporting only) • Alignment with strategic objectives of HMRI and NIER • Identification of emerging research strengths and potential new PRCs
Emerging Research Leaders • Seminars to be delivered by internal and external experts to foster and support identified early and mid-career researchers. • Giving Effective Research Presentations • Understanding ERA • Writing Effective Grant Applications • Building Research Leaders • Writing Highly Cited Publications
Internationalisation • Global Innovation Chairs • Prof Geoff Whitty – Equity in Education • Balanced Land Use – in partnership with NSW government • ArunChockalingam – GIC Visiting Fellow • Jointly Awarded Degrees • Global Partnership Plan implementation • Project collaboration • Research and student exchange • Joint appointments • World rankings working group
