Causes of the American Revolution Perspectives
Mercantilism • Colonies existed to benefit the mother country by providing raw materials to be manufactured into finished products which were then sold back to the colonies. • Colonies were limited to doing most business with the mother country regardless of whether or not it benefited them.
Lack of Representation • Colonists didn’t feel like they were being represented fairly in Parliament (British version of Congress). • British government responded by saying that the colonists were represented by members of Parliament that had been elected by the people back in England.
Taxes • Britain was in debt after fighting the French & Indian War and felt that the colonists should help pay off the debt. • Colonists felt like they were being asked to pay taxes in which they had no say in passing. (Remember – lack of representation in Parliament.)
Proclamation of 1763 • Passed by the British government in order to keep the colonists & Native Americans separated to minimize fighting. • Colonists didn’t like being told where they could live and saw it as a sign that the British government was going to take even more control of the colonies
Stamp Act - 1765 • Tax on paper products imported into the colonies • Colonists responded w/boycotts organized by the Sons & Daughters of Liberty • Colonists formed the Stamp Act Congress to demand the repeal of the tax. Parliament eventually repealed it.
Boston Massacre - 1770 • Boston colonists harassed British troops by throwing snowballs & taunting them. • Soldiers opened fire killing five. Including Crispus Attucks (first African-American to be killed in the war)
Boston Tea Party - 1773 • Parliament passed Tea Act giving British East India Company complete monopoly on tea in the colonies. • Sons of Liberty raided three British ships in Boston Harbor destroying 340 chests of tea.
Intolerable Acts (AKA Coercive Acts) - 1774 • Passed in reaction to the Boston Tea Party to force colonists to pay for the tea & enforce British rule. • They: • Closed the port of Boston • Imposed military rule on all of Massachusetts • Suspended the Massachusetts legislature & town meetings • All the colonies rallied around Massachusetts • Men in the towns around Boston begin to organize and store arms (Minutemen)
