Cosc 4765 Computer Security Thinking beyond today
Beyond Today • Computer Security • Security education is covered more like a history lesson. • Hopefully so the same mistakes are not made again. • As previous stated, we can’t think of all the attack vectors. • But we should try.
Beyond Today (2) • computer security risks and defenses – do not exist in isolation • these systems interact intimately with the needs, beliefs, and values of people. • This is especially true as computers become more pervasive, embedding themselves not only into laptops, desktops, and the Web, but also into every day objects, like our cars, phones, medical devices, and toys. • computer security issues may arise anywhere there are “computers”.
Emerging Technology • The idea is also look at emerging tech • What if X is embraced by the general population • What is the best thing that could happen and how would it better the lives of people or locations? • What is the worst thing that could go wrong and how would it affect the people or locations? • What impact will it have on society? • In other words, What are the social implementations? • The good, the bad, and the ugly. • What happens if it’s fails? • What are the implementations? • What happens if it’s hacked? • What are the implementations?
Emerging Technology (2) • Looking at previous “emerging tech” that is new embraced by the general population • What tech didn’t really exist say 5 years ago? • Couple of examples: • Social Media • Smartphones • GPS navigation • lots more.
Emerging Technology (3) • And what is coming in say 5 to 10 years (near future)? • Medical? • Cars? • Social? • Toys and Entertainment? • Communications? • Other? • Robots?
SciFi? • If this sounds like Science Fiction • That’s the idea, but in the near future, less then 20 years out from today. • Many books and movies have looked at the near future, not just for computers, but lots of things. • Some are pretty good, even predictive • many are not since they forgot the “Science” part.
