Should schools be allowed to randomly drug test their students?
Article 21a- Random drug testing of all students is needed Reason #1- In some schools a student can witness drug deals everyday. Random drug testing would scare students from using drugs. Peer pressure would not be as effective. Reason #2- If a police car is protecting a house, a thief will think twice about stealing from it. Random drug testing works the same way to deter drug use. Reason #3- Drug testing is done in the workforce and school is meant to prepare people for the workforce.
Article 22a- Random drug testing should not be used on the non-sporting student body • Reason #1- legal drugs could trigger a positive drug test (anti-depressants, pain killers) • Reason #2- There are better visual tests to tell if someone is high (red eyes, odd moods, etc) Reason #3- Students will react with extreme anger. It is important to maintain privacy.
Article 24a- Drug testing should be done in some cases. • Reason #1- Drug tests would deter students from using drugs. Non-drug users would have nothing to fear and results from a lab are much more accurate than a visual test. • Reason #2- Tests can be fooled and it takes a long time for test results to return from the lab. • Reason #3- Random locker searches and breathalysers should supplement drug tests. Students should be provided with counselling for their addictions and information about the devastating effects of drugs should be taught in schools.
