  2. Welcome to Page One -Your Writing and Language Center!

  3. Meet Your Instructor! • Your Eng. 080 instructors are Tracy Heinlein & Sarah Legg • This presentation will explain all the requirements for this course. • Please fill out the Eng. 080 Orientation Worksheet as you watch this presentation.

  4. Eng. 080 Outcomes • You will: • Develop a greater appreciation for one-on-one learning • Discover what resources Page One provides • Improve your writing and grammar skills • Become a more self-directed learner • Acquaint yourself with computer-based learning

  5. How Do I Get Credit? • 4.0 (A) = 20 hours of study in Page One • 10 thirty minute tutoring sessions = 5 hours • Computer Skills Practice = 15 hours

  6. Navigator for 95/96 Students • Students enrolled in Eng. 95/96 may earn their tutoring hours by attending the study group sessions with our tutor navigator.

  7. “Morphology Tutorials” • Students who do not have enough homework from their class can complete their tutoring hours by working on morphology lessons. • These are a series of worksheets you will complete with a tutor that will show you how manipulate words and word parts – suffixes, prefixes, roots - to make you a stronger writer.

  8. Are There Any Other Requirements? • Yes!!! You must also: • Meet with the Page One director at the beginning, middle and end of the quarter • Document all your tutorial sessions on your Tutor Record Sheet. • Record all your computer work on your Computer Record Sheet

  9. Does Eng. 080 Affect My Grade in Eng. 95/96 or Eng. 97/98? • No. Eng. 080 is a separate class for which you earn a separate grade from the one you earn in Eng. 95/96 or 97/98.

  10. Can I Start the Class Anytime During the Quarter No. Students who wait until after the middle of the quarter to begin completing their hours at Page One will not be eligible to earn a 4.0. • We advise students to begin working on their Page One hours at the beginning of the quarter. • All tutoring sessions must be completed by finals week. Tutoring sessions during finals week will NOT count toward your English 080 grade.

  11. Where Do I get Started? • Once we have created a Tutorial Record Sheet and folder for you, we will store these at the English 080 station in Page One. • Every time you come in, you will begin by picking up your folder here and clocking in on the Time Keeper.

  12. What is a Time Keeper? • A Time Keeper keeps track of the time you spend in the Page One Writing Center – so it is important to clock in and out because this data will affect your grade. • A writing tutor will help you create an account on the Time Keeper.

  13. Can I Do Homework as Part of Eng. 080? • No. Eng. 080 is separate from your other classes. You will not get Eng. 080 credit for working on homework from other classes while in the Loft. • You do not get credit for typing essays on Word. This does not count as computer self-study!! • However, if you need help in an English class, you can work with a Loft tutor, which will count toward your Eng. 080 hours.

  14. What Is The Purpose of the Tutor Record Sheet? • To track your work, hours, and progress • Ultimately it is your responsibility to make sure every conference with a writing tutor is documented on the record sheet. • The record sheet will be the heaviest factor in determining your grade.

  15. Computer Self-Study: Writing • To practice writing, we’ll have you work on a program called “Writer’s Resources”. • This program covers a variety of topics including grammar and essay writing. • We won’t make assignments, but rather have you choose sections that will help you with your course.

  16. Computer Self-Study: Reading • For reading, we’ll have you work on a program called “Active Reading”. • This covers a variety of reading skills at different levels.

  17. Software Instructions • Each computer station has a software instruction manual. • This manual provides step-by- step instructions about each software program in Page One. • You can use this resource to help you choose programs that will help you achieve your academic goals.

  18. Documenting Computer Work • You must document the work you do on the computer to get credit. • Use the Computer Record Sheets at the Eng. 080 Resource Station to document the programs and lessons you work on in Page One. • You must do this to get credit for computer self study.

  19. To summarize - For a 4.0, you must: • Meet with a writing tutor 10 times (5 hours) during the quarter. • Complete 15 hours of independent study on the computer. • Meet with the Page One director 3 times.
