  13. Tips to Broaden Search Results • Try a more general search option (keyword, keyword relevance) • Remove words that can have alternate spellings, forms or synonyms from your search • Browse by author last name • Browse by subject • Try a larger database

  14. Tips to Narrow Search Results • Narrow key word searching to the target field (for example title or author) • Narrow by publication date • Add more key words • Choose a smaller, more controlled database

Accessing Full Content - Books • Physical • In the library – call number and location • Not in the library – Interlibrary Loan or OK-Share • Online Subscribed content • catalog / database link (PLUS network username and password if off campus) • Other Online content • Some free • Some free with registration • Some charge ($30-$50 common)

  20. Periodical Locations • 1st floor (if currently received, most recent 10 years) • Basement storage (all if not currently received, issues more than 10 years old even if currently received) • All microfilm and microfiche in basement storage

  21. Copying, Printing, Saving - Online • Most PDF files can be saved as a copy from the Adobe reader • Most databases have a built in email option, for those that don’t (for example JSTOR) you can save to the desktop, open your email and attach the file and send a message to yourself

  22. Library Print Copies • Scan to email on the library’s printer/copier/scanners • Email small files (2-3 pages) only • Scan to flash drive on 5th floor printer/copier/scanner for larger files

Microfilm & Microfiche • Insert film or fiche • Hold the header readable side up for fiche – place the fiche between the layers of glass • Follow diagram for film – be sure to place the film between the layers of glass • Move the glass to find the place on fiche and to film • Use the icons on the screen to roll and unroll the film

  24. Use autoadjust • Click and drag lines to define scan area • Click print to print one page at a time (file name will be SCAN) • Click save to drive 1 to print as a single file or attach to an email • Click save to drive 2 (flash drive) to save to a flash drive • Click finish only after the entire file has been scanned to create a single file • Problems? – turn off the scanner and turn it back on, turn off the computer and turn it back on
