The NAFEO/Walmart Project • Faculty Learning Communities • Focus on Preparation of Faculty for Effective Teaching and Learning • Provides Pedagogy, Methods, and Strategies • Facilitators Conduct Workshops and Seminars and Mentor Faculty • Piloted Summer 2010 with 15 Faculty
Faculty Learning Communities • Purpose: To provide a series of faculty development opportunities which will equip all participating faculty to more effectively teach students by aligning their teaching styles with students’ diverse learning styles • Participants: Thirty faculty members have participated in three Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) The Third - A Mathematics Faculty Learning Community
Results and Recommendations • Improvement in Student Ratings of Instruction (SRI) • Decrease in DFWI Grades • More Effective Teaching • Increase in Student Success in Designated Courses • Open Communication Regarding Effective Teaching Across Disciplines
Results • NAFEO Grant • Presentation to New BOG Members-9/6/11 • Presentation and Publication for the October 30-November 2, 2011 National Consortium on Student Retention and Data Exchange
Recommendations • Institutionalize Faculty Learning Communities • Funding for FLC for 2011-2012 Become Permanent Funds • All New Faculty Assigned to Teach Courses for Freshmen and Sophomores, Participate in FLC Prior to The First Day of Class
