System-Level Test Sequence • Main Test Blocks - He-I (4 K) functional tests: Done (March) - Spacecraft mechanical qualification tests: Done (June) - He-II (2 K) tests- SPT, RMS, SOVT-1 - Done (August) - Significant delays and problems with thermal environment due to problems with the Herschel cryostat - Cryostat needs to be warmed up to ~ 100 K to clean out frozen N2 contamination in the He vessel (further delay of ~ 3 weeks) - Thermal Balance/Thermal Vacuum (TB/TV): November- SOVT-2: January• Earliest feasible launch date now = April 2009• Next major instrument review: - Instrument Flight Acceptance Review (IFAR) - Inputs = SVR outcome + summary of system test results to date - Outcome = acceptance of instrument for flight - Kick-off meeting Oct. 6 SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 4
SPIRE SVR-3 Summary SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 5
SVR-3 ESA Objectives • Assess FM ILT results• Take stock of instrument verification at module and satellite level• Review expected scientific performance• Generate input for higher level Herschel reviews • 33 documents provided (~ 1/3 old; 1/3 updated; 1/3 new) prior to the review • Review meeting in Stockholm October 29/30 2007 • No formal Review Board Report available, but main points are known SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 6
SVR-3 – Board Conclusions Technical issues 1. Electromagnetic Interference - System testing is critical - Possible need to implement SVM shielding? 2. Microphonics - Ground testing not straightforward and not fully flight representative - Strategy for in-orbit work-around needed - General scepticism about the ~ 100 mg prediction at the instrument interfaces 3. Bolometer temperatures – systematic increae? - Situation will be clarified after SPT - If T is cumulative, implications will need to be assessed 4. System testing - Should some contingency be built in to the ESA test plan? SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 7
SVR-3 – Board Conclusions Documentation and planning1. Proper documentation and traceability needed for CUS and uplink parameters2. PV and Commissioning plans - Need to be refined and detailed timelines defined - PV plan must have objective that all AOTs/modes are validated 3. Routine-phase calibration plan needs to be detailed SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 8
SVR-3 – Board Conclusions • Management and staffing • Coping with parallel activities - System testing, FS testing, ICC development - Intense activity in PV phase - Detailed staffing plan must be formulated and maintained to cope with the demands and optimise use of resources - Concerns over planned departure of Tanya Lim (Calibration Scientist) • Consider Letters of Agreement between institutes/funding agencies for ICC staff resources SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 9
System Level Test Results SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 10
EMI Testing STM-2 test (SPIRE CQM in Herschel cryostat) - Susceptibility in 30-MHz region - Associated with direct bolometer heating - Not a problem unless modulated within signal bandwidth Conducted susceptibility tests in FM Cooldown 5 - Anomalous effect seen on half of photometer 350 mm array - Spurious noise at 1.5 Hz observed with un-modulated RF disturbance • System-Level EMC tests - Conducted Emission test done end October – results OK - Spacecraft Radiated Emission tests – very low levels recorded - Conducted and Radiated Susceptibility tests done during SPT - Results being analysed - No major susceptibilities apparent - Report will be presented at IFAR SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 11
Spectrometer Mechanism Tests Objectives:- Verify SMEC performance (needs cryostat to be horizontal) - Evaluate susceptibility to microvibration from reaction wheels First test in May not successful- Problems with latch EGSE and some mechanism friction near the end stop Repeated after spacecraft vibration testing- All OK SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 12
Spacecraft Mechanical Qualification (June) • Acoustic tests: No major concerns for SPIRE Basic instrument functional test: Completed successfully Sine tests: No significant issues Mechanical qualification closed for IFAR as far as SPIRE is concerned SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 13
Special Performance Test (SPT) Summary First 300-mK operation of SPIRE in Herschel since delivery in April 2007 - Critical to assess performance in Herschel and post-vibration, especially: - Cooler - Detectors - EMI susceptibility SPIRE SPT carried out 20 – 23 August Main SPIRE tests that were attempted: - Cooler recycle - Detector operation - Load curves - Noise measurements and bias optimisation - 300-mK thermal control - BSM operation - Stray light characterisation - EMC and microphonics - Internal calibrators SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 14
Reference Mission Scenario (RMS) Test Test of instrument/spacecraft commanding Done 3 – 4 September - Automatic cooler didn’t work (wrong thermal environment) - Manual recycle used Chop-jiggle tests on BSM did not work - SPIRE OBS problem No other major problems on the instrument side SOVT followed immediately – no time to react SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 15
System Operational ValidationTest (SOVT-1) First complete end-end test of Herschel/MOC/HSC/ICC Operation – simulation of a week in the life of Herschel Not intended primarily for instrument characterisation Done 6 – 10 September Highlights - Parallel mode worked fine (dual cooler recycle, maps) - ICC data access and general functioning worked well - 21 hr timeline operation worked well Shortcomings - Cooler hold-time only ~ 10 hrs – a lot of data lost - Problems in transferring telemetry to ICC - Numerous minor issues and lessons learned SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 16
System Test Results Cooler recycle - Automatic recycle not feasible as conductance to tank too low (no liquid in pod) - Manual recycle OK - 3He stage temp = 297 mK - 20 hr hold time (close to what Lionel expects for the set-up) Detector health and operation- All BDAs OK - Achieved bath temps: - 305 – 320 mK for photometer; 315 – 330 mK for FTS - Lower DT between fridge and detectors than in ILT Load curves - Poor quality due to unstable thermal conditions - Most previous harness-related bad channels now OK - Photometer: ~ 5 bad pixels across all three arrays - FTS: As expected (D5, D6 bad; catered for in AOT) - Stray light and lid emission characterisation also derived - Will be assessed in detail SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 17
System Test Results Noise measurement and bias optimisation - A lot of 1/f and changing lid temperature - Noise at a few Hz is at the level expected 300-mK thermal control - Not done due to SPIRE OBS problems BSM operation - Basic operation OK - Tune up test – results difficult to analyse Internal calibrators - Both OK - PCal response verifies optical alignment and model Conclusions - Everything works – highest risks now essentially retired - Too much cryostat activity going on during the tests - Some additional problems with SPIRE tests scripts - Various tests need to be repeated in TB/TV SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 18

PCal Illumination Model (no cryocover) SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 20 PSW sampling PLW sampling
PCal Illumination Model and Data (with cryocover mirror) SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 21 PSW sampling PLW sampling
SPT Noise Performance Spectrometer arrays Photometer arrays Data Dark bolometer noise model • High yield • Excess wrt dark bolometer model likely due to background from lid (consistent with load curve assessment) • Overall: as good as in ILT SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 22
SOVT-1 SPIRE maps from SPIRE-PACS Parallel Mode test Processed end-end with current version of SPIRE pipeline Position angle of the map orientation has wrong sign wrt the AOR (magnitude OK) Size of the maps is consistent with the AOR RA & Dec of the map centre not correct Signals are negative (dummy bolometer parameters) Input AOR SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 23
SOVT-1 SPIRE maps from SPIRE-PACS Parallel Mode test A woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all. Dr. Samuel Johnson Input AOR SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 24
Future Plan Warm up to ~ 100 K: Most of Oct. • TB/TV test - In LSS space simulation chamber; End. Oct – Mid-Dec. - SPIRE tests currently planned for late Nov. - Before the test, SPIRE needs to upload and test new OBS (including FDIR) - TB/TV plan being updated to take into account SPT results - SPIRE programme will fit into two days but with no margin SOVT-2 (January 2009) - Final system test before shipping - Currently scheduled for January - Will simulate a subset of PV-phase observations Helium depletion to ~ half full for transport by air (in horiz. orientation) - Final SMEC test with cryostat horizontal • Transpot to Kourou: late Jan. • Launch: mid-April SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 25
Previous Main Technical Risks Spectrometer Mechanism- Latch Power Unit functioned nominally during mechanical qualification - Horizontal test repeated after qualification – now OK - FS SMEC repaired and will soon be tested - Final check before shipping EMI susceptibility - Low spacecraft emission levels – good - Results of CS and RS tests encouraging - Not yet fully assessed but no major problems apparent Detector temperatures - No additional DT observed BDA Kevlar supports - All BDAs and 300-mK system are healthy SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 26
Remaining Concerns SPIRE OBS and DPU - Some OBS problems in SOVT-1 - FDIR still to be included - Some corrupted memory locations - Under investigation by IFSI/RAL Testing at Kourou- SPIRE arguing for an opportunity for a cooler recycle to carry out final checks - Not currently in ESA’s plans Adequate completion of all system tests before shipping- Some important tests (e.g., jiggle-map; 300-mK thermal control) not yet done - Continuing ressure on schedule and compromised tests (e.g. due to unstable thermal environment) may lead to short-cuts SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 27
Flight Spare SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 28
Flight Spare • First cooldown now completed (March 24 – End April)• All planned tests done • No serious problems• Some minor anomalies - SMEC ZPD position not in expected position - Possibly incorrect procedure in establishing fiducial position - BSM wiring problem – will be corrected before next cooldown - PMW array misaligned in Y (chop direction) by ~ 1 mm - Possible error on adapter plate - Detector unit has been de-mounted for investigation• Following the cooldown, SMEC encoder replacement was successful carried out by LAM at RAL SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 29
Flight Spare Cooldown 1: Top-Level Summary • Detailed analysis still to be done• Cooler performs nominally• Detectors nominal - Very high yield (< 5 dead pixels not associated with known ILT cryostat harness problems) - PCal and noise data to be analysed• Optics OK (except PMW alignment as noted above) • Instrument throughput - Looks OK• Spectrometer performance - Nulling with SCal OK - Interferogram symmetry not as good as in FM SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 30
Flight Spare Data Analysis • Data analysis priorities - Detector performance (esp. noise) - Cooler hold time - FTS performance and systematics - Throughput and passbands• Plan: - Produce a basic set of test reports equivalent to FM SVR-3 documentation - Lower priority to FM activities - Expect to be done by end 2008 SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 31
Flight Spare: Plan for Second Cooldown • Second cooldown planned for October (largely coincident with Herschel warm-up) - Some delays due to use of FS to trouble-shoot SPIRE OBS problem - May slip into November • Second cooldown objectives - Validate the SMEC refurbishment - Photometer AOTs - Spectrometer mapping AOTs - Redundant-side testing - Photometer Thermal Control performance - Test PV-Phase scripts - Produce data for use in SCIOPS groups PV-phase simulations • FS cryovibration: no longer planned SPIRE Status Matt Griffin 32
