5. The graduate program in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences is housed in the School of Health Sciences, Human Services, and Nursing. It is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) (2015-2023) and prepares students to meet the academic & clinical requirements for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) & New York State License in Speech-Language Pathology.

8. Graduate students will complete a minimum of 400 hours of clinical practicum (25 hours of observations, 2 in-house clinics, 2 diagnostic clinics, 2 externships, and 20 hours of audiology practicum) • Additional credits needed for certification by ASHA: “Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of biological sciences, physical sciences, statistics & the social/behavioral sciences. You will need to take one three credit course in each of the following:   • 1course in the biological sciences: • BIO 183: Human Biology; 4 credits: 3 hrs lecture, 1hrs lab • 1 course in the physical sciences: • PHY 141: Sound, Speech, and Music; 3 credits: 2 hrs lecture, 1hr lab • 1 course in the social sciences: • PSY 166 General Psychology; 3 credits: 3 hrs • SOC 166 Fundamentals of Sociology; 3 credits: 3 hrs

SOC 227 Sociology of the Family; 3 creidts: 3 hrs • 1 course in statistics: • PSY 226: Statistical Methods in Psychology; 4 credits: 4 hrs • Math 132: Introduction to Statistics; 4 credits: 4 hrs • If you have not completed these courses as an undergraduate, you may take them while enrolled in graduate program but they do not count toward your graduate requirements of 60 credits • You may take these courses as undergraduate courses, graduate courses, on-line or on any campus. Lehman does offer these courses (some online and some on site).

10. The Speech & Hearing Center • The Speech and Hearing Center at Lehman College provides state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic services to individuals in the NYC Metropolitan area and to members of the Lehman community who have speech, language, hearing, feeding, and swallowing deficits. • Graduate students complete two supervised clinical and diagnostic practica under the supervision of full-time faculty and experienced adjunct supervisors. • All supervisors in the Speech and Hearing Center hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) or Audiology (CCC-A) and are licensed speech-language pathologists or audiologists in the state of New York.

The Speech and Hearing Center has individual and group therapy rooms with observation areas for family and student observers, and seminar rooms. • The entire clinic is equipped with current technology, which permits video observation and recording of clinical sessions for student and faculty development. • A wireless audio-visual system provides ongoing supervisor-student interaction. • The Speech and Hearing Center houses the Voice and Speech Analysis laboratories as well as the VIVE (Visual Instruction to Drive Expression) Studio for the preparation of resources and materials for intervention.

In-house clinical practicum: • Adult Neurogenic Clinic (AKA Aphasia Clinic) • EI (Early Intervention) Clinic (birth to 3) • Preschool Clinic (3-5) • School-Age Clinic (6-21) • Bilingual Adult Group • Toddler and Preschool groups in the Lehman College daycare promoting social skills, emergent literacy skills and literacy development. • Externship sites: • Variety of settings: • Public and private schools (pre-k-12) in NYC, Westchester, and Long Island • Skilled Nursing care facilities • Hospitals • Private clinics

13. Our Graduate Students • The graduate program at Lehman college has a very diverse student body, with students coming from variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, speaking variety of languages. • Here are some of the languages spoken in our program: • Spanish, Italian, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Hebrew, Russian, Yiddish, Japanese, Greek, Farsi, Czech, Polish and more  • Hear it directly from our own graduate students (videos)

The National Student Speech Language & Hearing Association (NSSLHA) – Lehman Chapter • 40 members - robust number of passionate undergraduate and graduate students • Guest Speakers have included:  • The ASHA Advisory Councilmember for NYS • Graduate Students Advising on Graduate School • Merrill Parra the Director of the Office of Disabilities

15. Lehman’s chapter sponsored (with numerous cupcake and cake sales):   • SpeechLess – a documentary portraying the life of three stroke survivors, who suffer from aphasia, a loss of language produced by a brain damage. Skyped in the Director from Amsterdam with an Panel of Experts from Lehman • In December collected over 100 toys for children with autism of New York Families.

16. Student/Faculty Research • The Graduate Program at Lehman College promotes the integration of theory and research into evidence-based practice, analytic thought in clinical decision-making, and the application of technology to clinical practice. • Many of our faculty members are involved in research and have labs on campus. • Many of our graduate students assist the faculty and even present the collaborative work at the ASHA annual conferences.

17. Teaching certificate for Students with Speech-Language Disabilities (TSSLD) • The Lehman Graduate Program in SLP is registered by the New State Department of Education. Students who have completed the Lehman Master’s program are considered qualified candidates for the TSSLD if they have also completed the following: • 5 courses (15 credits) – all courses are offered online in winter and summer sessions • one externship in elementary and/or secondary school that includes experience with students with speech and language disabilities in early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. • NY State Exams: (ALST, EAS) • Completion of the following workshops: Child Abuse, School Violence, Autism, and Bullying and discrimination

18. Bilingual Extension • This program is designed for students who are enrolled in the Graduate Program in SLP and who seek a bilingual extension. • Applicants for the Advanced Certificate of Bilingual Extension are required to: • 12 credits of course work • 50 hours of supervised field experiences providing bilingual speech-language-hearing services to children • Pass the Bilingual Education Assessment (BEA) exam (in addition to the Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST) and the Educating All Students (EAS) exam) • Admission Requirements: • Demonstrate proficiency in another language other than English • Pass an interview requiring a writing sample in English and in the selected language.

Admission Requirements • A bachelor’s degree in speech–language pathology (or its equivalent) from an accredited college or university. • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in a different major must complete 24 credits of core prerequisite course work: SPV 221 (Language Acquisition) SPV 245 (Articulatory Phonetics) SPV 246 (Introduction to linguistics) SPV 247 (Anatomy & Physiology) SPV 249 (Speech & Hearing science) SPV 326 (Speech path I) SPV 327 (Speech path II) SPV 328 (Introduction to Audiology)

20. In order to apply to our program, you must have grades recorded on your transcript for at least 6 of these prerequisite courses, and be enrolled in the remaining courses, the semester you apply. • If you have questions regarding these courses please contact the undergraduate adviser, Prof. Mary Boylan: Mary.Boylan@lehman.cuny.edu • A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the major or in the prerequisite courses • A minimum of 2 letters of recommendation from professors (at least one letter must be from a professor from a speech pathology/audiology course). • Personal essay – 500 words • Resume / CV • Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores taken within the last five years with a writing score of at least 3.5

21. If you hold a Master’s degree in another discipline you will not need to take the GRE exam IF: • The degree was awarded by a university/college in the U.S. • The degree was awarded by a university outside of the U.S. but the courses were taught in English. • If you have any questions, please email the Graduate Program Director, Dr. Seiger-Gardner Liat.Seiger@lehman.cuny.edu • Potential students will be invited for an interview • Please note, the Graduate Program at Lehman College is very competitive. The admission criteria outlined above is the minimum criteria and not the acceptance criteria! • We accept up to 25 qualified students each semester. • The deadline for Fall enrollment is February 15thand for Spring enrollment is October 1st.

All paper work, documents, transcripts (from all post-secondary schools attended), GRE scores, letters of recommendations, etc. need to be in the admissions office by the deadline! • It is your personal obligation to contact admissions to make sure all your documents are in and your application is complete! • Incomplete applications will NOT be reviewed.

23. Foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated by a Foreign Transcript Evaluation Agency such as AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers). This and other agencies can be found: http://www.naces.org/index.html (national association of credential evaluation services) • The evaluation and translation should be completed 8-10 weeks prior to the deadline. • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required by students educated in non-English speaking areas. The TOEFL should not be more than 2 years old. The Lehman College Institutional Code is 2312. For information and registration materials contact TOEFL. Required minimum score is 500 for the Paper-Based Test and 61 for the Internet-Based Test.
