  2. Endocrine System Mrs. Hill

  3. Endocrine System- network of tissues and organs that release chemicals that control certain body functions • Hormones- chemical messengers inthe body

  4. The Hormones and Their Functions • A. Pituitary Gland- “Master Gland” Located at the base of the brain -regulates other endocrine glands -regulates growth and development -regulates body temperature

  5. B. Thyroid Gland- located in throat near larnyx, largest of the glands -produces thyroxin- regulates metabolism

  6. C. Parathyroid- located within the Thyroid Gland -regulates certain minerals in the body (calcium and phosphorus)

  7. D. Adrenal Glands- located on top of the kidneys -produces Epinephrine- prepares your body for emergency, fight or flight, response muscle tone increases and heart beat strength -produces cortisone- control’s body’s use of salt and fat

  8. E. Pancreas- located below the stomach and above small intestines -produces digestive juices and insulin, needed for the body to break down sugar

  9. F. Ovaries- female reproductive glands, located in pelvic area -produce estrogen, which stimulates secondary sex characteristics

  10. G. Testes- male reproductive glands, located in the groin area -produce testosterone, stimulates male secondary sex characteristics

  11. Endocrine System Disorders • Diabetes- not enough insulin being produced, or doesn’t work right • Type 1 (Juvenile Diabetes)- usually diagnosed in children and young adults (usually genetic) • Type 2 (Adult Onset)- most common form, becoming epidemic in children because of obesity

  12. Goiter- when thyroid enlarges, causing a lump in the neck. Caused by not enough iodine in diet, treated with supplements or iodized salt.

  13. Growth Extremes- to much growth hormone from pituitary gland, causing a conditioned called Gigantism (very large person) -too little hormone causes Dwarfism (a very small person)
