  1. Religion and Equality For each topic you will need to know a range of Christian views as well as your own viewpoint • This module covers 5 main areas: Fist we need to know what Christian denominations we are discussing

  2. The Christian Denominations Christian do NOT all believe the same thing and are divided into different groups depending on faith and establishment The Roman Catholic Church • This denomination is a traditional group of Christians who believe in Natural Law: doing what God intended in a natural way. Up until the C16th Catholics were the dominant group of Christians in Europe. Catholics are controlled by the Pope in Rome Protestant Churches • These are the Christian groups that developed after Martin Luther’s debate in 1517. • These are modern Christians who have re-interpreted the Bible and have a different view to the Roman Catholics. • These Christians are NOT controlled by the Pope.

  3. The Principle of Equality • It is often argued that everyone should be treated equally: that we should have the same rights as each other and be treated the same as each other • Equality is often linked to two negative areas: • Prejudice: the belief made about people based on appearance rather than fact • Discrimination: this is the action based on the prejudiced thought • One of the pieces of evidence that people use in arguing in favour of equality is an article from the Human Rights Act Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin

  4. Christianity & Equality • According to Christianity, God created everything and everyone, therefore we are all one in the eyes of God and no one is superior or inferior. • There is a lot of evidence in the New Testament about the way in which we should treat other people: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another Then Peter began to speak: ‘I now realise how true it is that God does not show favouritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right’

  5. Racism • Racism has existed throughout the centuries with people believing that some races are superior to others, that some are ‘chosen people’ and some are no better than animals. • Christianity teaches that everyone is the same and no one should be treated differently. There are a number of instances in the Bible where Jesus has shown kindness to people from other races

  6. Racism • Although Christianity teaches equality there are instances in history that have shown otherwise:

  7. Racism: Martin Luther King • MLK was born in 1929 in to world of segregation between black and white people in USA. In 1955, MLK lead a peaceful protest in support of a woman, who has refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. This spawned the Civil Rights Movement that lead MLK’s famous speech in Washington and to the eradication of segregation in USA • Even though MLK made such progress racism still exists and discriminating acts still happen

  8. The Role of Women • Even though, as we have seen, men and women should be treated equally. • Since 1975 it has been illegal in the UK to discriminate against women in recruitment, promotion and training • It is also illegal to dismiss a woman from employment because of pregnancy

  9. The Role of Women • There are three different Christian views on the role of women

  10. Attitudes to Other Religions There are three main approaches to dealing with other religions: • Within the Christian church all three of these views are evident. • Most Christians believe that they have the truth and feel the need to convert people to their religion

  11. Attitudes to Other Religions • Throughout history we have seen three approaches to dealing with other religions from the Christian perspective Missionary Work: For centuries Christians have travelled abroad believing that it was their Christian duty to spread their word of the Gospel and convert people to Christianity There are still people today who follow this path Jackie Pullinger In 1966 Jackie travelled to the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong to preach the Gospel. She successfully rescued 500 people from opium addiction and converted many to Christianity

  12. Attitudes to Other Religions • Another approach to other religions is through evangelism Evangelism: This means the spreading of the ‘Good News’ or the Gospels. The Salvation Army believe that evangelism is an important part of their faith and it is their duty to spread God’s word. They also carry out essential work to help the poor and disadvantaged Ecumenism: This is the principle of different denominations or religions working together for a common goal. Taize is a community that welcomes people from all denominations and works to improve relations between Catholics and Protestants

  13. Forgiveness & Reconciliation • This seems to have been Jesus’ favourite topic of conversation, he has more to say about this topic than any other in the Bible. He reminded his listeners that God was always ready to forgive anyone who repented their sins and asked for forgiveness • Forgiveness is a central part of Christian belief. Christians believe that forgiveness helps people to overcome their troubles • However, they do believe that the person who is being forgiven must genuinely repent and people must be punished for the sins that they have committed in this life.

  14. Forgiveness & Reconciliation To evidence the belief in forgiveness are 3 examples from the Bible

  15. Forgiveness & Reconciliation • In the Roman Catholic church the need for forgiveness from God is recognised as being very important. As such they celebrate one of the sacraments directly relating to this need: The Sacrament of Reconciliation: Here people confess their sins to a priest and he pronounces an absolution over them. This means that they can know that God has forgiven their sins The Sacrament of the Eucharist: During the Eucharist people remember that Jesus died on the cross to take away human sins and allow people to reconcile with God. This reconciliation is due to Jesus’ death and resurrection

  16. Practice Exam Question Religion and Equality: this exam question is worth 24 marks • What is meant by equality? (1) • What does reconciliation mean? (2) • Describe Christian beliefs about women (3) • Explain Christian attitudes towards other religions (6) • “Only Christianity has the answer, all other religions are wrong”. Discuss this statement.
