  2. What is the United Faculty of Florida? • A professional organization of, by,and forfaculty in Florida higher education • A democratic, member-supported, volunteer-driven voice for faculty at FSU and statewide • Your bargaining agent for salary, benefits, academic freedom, tenure, promotion, due process, sabbaticals, etc. • See web site (www.uff-fsu.org) Find Your Voice at FSU

  3. Why Do Faculty Need UFF? • Because no one else speaks independently for FSU faculty, and faculty should have a voice • Because, to cite one example, the June, 2004 FSU Board of Trustees meeting agenda included: • Student Government Association … 5 minutes • Faculty Senate … 5 minutes • Business group touting the view of universities as mass-production degree machines and urging shifts of public funds to private colleges … 45 minutes! Find Your Voice at FSU

  4. Who Supports UFF? • Hundreds of UFF members at FSU include some of FSU’s most distinguished faculty, scholars dedicated to their fields and to making FSU better • Why does UFF represent FSU faculty? • Short answer: Representation Election (October, 2003) • Yes (for UFF) 736 • No representation 33 Find Your Voice at FSU

  5. What UFF Does • Advances and protects faculty interests and rights • Surveys to highlight faculty views and concerns • Regular members-only social gatherings • Informational meetings, e.g., • Senator Bob Graham (now retired) re Florida constitutional amendment on university governance • Guest speakers on standardized testing at universities (a popular idea among many legislators and our governor) • Dean Rowe and Professor Ted Baker (UFF-FSU VP) on the “ABCs of the CBA” (Collective Bargaining Agreement) • UFF represents faculty in the Legislature Find Your Voice at FSU

  6. Florida General Revenue and Lottery Appropriations per Actual SUS Student FTE, 1989-90 through 2003-04* $ per FTE Enrollment From the State University Presidents’ Association (SUPA) 2005 Priorities *Adjusted for inflation, in constant (2003-04) dollars. Find Your Voice at FSU

  7. What Else? • You don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate • UFF-FSU faculty team just completed negotiations for 2006-07 “re-openers” (see flyer) • We’re making progress, but there’s more to do • Salaries that motivate and retain good faculty • Strengthen the core of what it means to be a real university – including faculty autonomy, collegial governance, and academic freedom – e.g., against well-intended but ill-considered “accountability” initiatives Find Your Voice at FSU

  8. Support the UFF-FSU Chapter • A stronger UFF-FSU Chapter means a stronger faculty voice at FSU. • That means a better FSU • Please help make FSU better … a better university and a better place to be a faculty member • Join UFF! • See www.uff-fsu.org/memform.pdf Find Your Voice at FSU
