Zope and Plone • Plone is a content management system • Open-source www.plone.org • Built using Zope, multiple “sites” in the server • Templates, extensible data types • Users, groups, access control • Many built-in and user-developed extensions • News, events, calendar • Wiki, Epoz, external editor interface

  4. Overall site organization • SCC Projects folder for public, shared • FORTRAN, LISP, NLS so far • SCC Meetings folder • Calendar • Help, About SCC, info • Members have own folders • Use form to request account

  5. Documents vs. Files • Documents • HTML, reformatted by browser • Convenient web-based or remote editing • Files • Binary or text, not reformatted • E.g., MS Word documents, downloadable • E.g., source code, viewable, downloadable • Upload source code as Files

Editing HTML • Four ways to edit HTML • Simple • Epoz • my preferences | Personal preferences • Content editor: none  Epoz • External editor (Frontpage, others?) • Download and install ZopeExternalEditor • Configure for your editor • Click on pencil to edit • Edit locally, upload using edit tab or FTP

  7. FTP • Use Internet Explorer or FTP client • Can handle subtrees of files • Uses file names to decide types • Source code  text files • Can add extensions • Note differences in folder names • Can also be used for HTML development
