ENGLISH FOR ALL STUDENTS • The only compulsory subject in schools across the state • Essential for graduation and WACE • Essential for university and TAFE entry
ENGLISH – 3 OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM IN 2007 • Texts traditions and cultures = TTC (TEE Literature) • English (TEE English and Senior English) • English as another language or dialect = EALD (ESL)
UNIVERSITY AND TAFE ENTRANCE • All three English courses of study are acceptable for university and TAFE entrance • All three courses can be used to calculate the tertiary entrance ranking = TER in 2008
ENGLISH AS ANOTHER LANAGUAGE OR DIALECT To qualify 1. Need to have been in Australia for less than 6 years at the start of year 11 2. To speak a language other than English at home - and other special circumstances
ENGLISH AS ANOTHER LANGUAGE OR DIALECT • The focus is on functional language and writing formats • Recommended for students who qualify and still need to work on basic English skills • Suitable for university or TAFE
TEXTS TRADITI0NS AND CULTURES (LITERATURE) • Students need to be working at least at level 3-4 at the end of year 10 • Students need be skilled readers and usually plan to apply for university • The focus is on understanding texts and cultures
ENGLISH COURSE OF STUDY We have divided this course into 2 pathways: Pathway 1(Senior English) Pathway 2 (TEE English)
ENGLISH PATHWAY 1 (SENIOR ENGLISH) • For students who are hoping to enter TAFE • Whose outcomes in English are level 3 or more • Who need more time to read texts and prepare their work
ENGLISH PATHWAY 2 (TEE ENGLISH) • For students who wish to apply for university • Who enjoy reading and writing and have at least level 3 - 4 in year 10 • Who enjoy all aspects of English including viewing
OUTCOMES BASED EDUCATION • All three of the English options will be all or partially outcomes based in 2007 • English started with the year 11 students in 2006 this year • EALD and TTC will be partially outcomes based next year
THE ENGLISH COURSES OF STUDY • All 3 courses use basically the same skills and assess 4 outcomes. • The outcomes may have different titles but they all involve the skills of: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing • Students study texts and produce their own texts
OUTCOMES BASED ENGLISH COURSES • All students must complete 4 units of English to graduate and achieve their WACE • They are now able to move from unit to unit as long as they complete 4 units – 1 each semester
ADVANTAGES OF OBE IN ENGLISH • Students are no longer locked into a 2 year course or a pathway to university or TAFE; their pathways are flexible • Students who take longer to mature and develop skills can now apply for university in year 12 even though they did not plan to in year 11
