Inter-agency and Expert Group on Gender Statistics • Established in December 2006 to: • Provide guidance and ensure coordination at the global level for the advancement of the Global Gender Statistics Programme • Its main tasks include taking stock, reviewing progress, challenges and emerging needs, and proposing actions to advance gender statistics at the international, regional and national levels • Key task: Coordination of activities/programmes to reduce overburden; maximize synergies and resources • Overall goal: better data to inform gender related policies • Milestone in 2011 with programme review on Gender Statistics at UN Statistical Commission prepared by Ghana more defined objectives and task

UN Statistical Commission 2011: UNSD to strengthen its leadership role in charting the path for the development of gender statistics globally UNSD and IAEG to report back to the Commission on their proposed work plans and strategies. • Strategic role of the Inter-Agency and Expert Group (IAEG) on Gender Statistics • Expansion of its scope of work to include: • Review of gender statistics with the aim of establishing a minimum set of gender indicators • Guiding the development of manuals and methodological guidelines for the production and use of gender statistics • Serving as the coordination mechanism for the global programme on gender statistics 3

  4. undertaking a comprehensive review of gender statistics programmes in countries; UN Statistical Commission 2011: • Specific tasks include: • continuing to hold annual meetings of the Inter-agency and Expert Group on Gender Statistics; • convening biannually the Global Forum on Gender Statistics; • offering technical support and advance methodological work for the enhancement of gender statistics programmes in countries 4

  7.  2013, Gender Statistics and UN Statistical Commission • 2013 UNSC: also • Min set of GS Requested: • Further clarification on the protocols of data collection from countries • Detailed metadata • Further consideration of indicators on valuation of unpaid work and migration • EDGE  Emphasized: • Need for timely implementation • In line with Global GS Programme • Develop standards  Encouraged: • Greater integration of gender stats into other areas, such as sustainable development

  8. at UN Statistical Commission 2014 • Secretary General’s Report on GS, forinformation only, on: • Update on progress achieved on specific tasks given by UNSC 2011 and 2013 • Report on outcomes of 7th meeting of the IAEG-GS • Propose next steps under the Global Gender Statistics Programme (to be identified and agreed by end of this meeting): • Min Set of GS: Tier I indicators - online dissemination of data and metadata • Capacity building: Tier II indicators- VAW, TUS, integrating gender dimension in statistics • Develop Standards and Emerging issues: Tier II – ICATUS + Tier III – EDGE project • Global Forum 2014 (and 8th IAEG-GS meeting) • Data Analysis: World’s Women 2015
