FGDC and GOS Metadata • Compliant metadata, richly informative • Metadata Repositories • GOS partnership
Complaint Metadata • More than CSDGM Sections 1 and 7 • Tools to help • CSDGM Graphic Representation • http://biology.usgs.gov/fgdc.metadata/version2/ • Metadata Parser aka “MP” • http://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/tools/doc/mp.html • Web, batch, and desktop apps available • Checks syntax/format not content
Richly informative metadata • Metadata Quick Guide • http://www.fgdc.gov/metadata/education/MetadataQuickQuide.pdf
EPA Metadata Sites The Urban Environment Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program EnviroFacts Estuaries Data Group Metadata Repositories • Z39.50 • Centralized • National Park Service • Centralized with program/agency identity • Distributed • ArcIMS Metadata Service • Web Accessible Folders (WAF) • OAI Initiative (library)
GOS Partnership • Register – Publish • Publisher • Geographic datasets • Images • Geoservices • Spatial solutions • Reference material • Events and activities • Geodata Partnership Opportunities • Schedule NSDI node • Metadata harvesting
GOS Metadata Harvest • How to contribute metadata: • Register existing metadata collection for harvesting, specify frequency and time. ArcIMS Server, Isite/ Z39.50, WAF or OAI • Upload metadata as CSDGM XML to the geodata.gov site • Enter metadata into a form at geodata.gov where it will be stored and indexed
Metadata HarvestA scheduled automated process for collecting new and updated metadata from a variety of metadata repositories • First retrieval- all metadata validated. Those containing GOS required content posted to geodata.gov • Previously harvested- only updated metadata retrieved • Validation • Requires GOS minimum metadata • Uses FGDC metatags for validation
Originator Metadata Date Title Abstract Purpose Time period Progress Maintenance Bounding Box Keywords GOS Required Metadata Content • Information Derived from Registration*: • Contact Person or Organization • Address type, Address • Phone number • Email • *When using online metadata form
GOS Metadata Validation- Metadata Parser (MP) • Error reports forwarded to agency • “Errors” to be remedied • “Warnings” acceptable • Metadata with errors are not posted to geodata.gov • Once errors are corrected, schedule for harvest • Common errors: • Currentness Reference- null (ground condition, publication date, ”free text”) • date format- YYYYMMDD (YYYY minimum)
Registering IMS or WMS • Using agency metadata tool and repository: • Create metadata describing service, enter address in “Online Linkage” and post to agency clearinghouse • On geodata.gov • Login • Go to publish a new record • Enter map service address
