Shoreline Metadata Profile Why a Shoreline Metadata Profile? • Shoreline is a surface water feature and part of the Framework hydrography theme • Standard captures “critical processes and conditions that revolve around creating and collecting shoreline data.” • The base Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata provides only for documentation of generic geospatial data.
Shoreline Metadata Profile Content of the Standard • Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (version 2.0), FGDC-STD-001-1998 • Introduces extended elements for Shoreline Data • Provides changes to conditionality and domain of existing Metadata elements to enhance applicability to shoreline data. • Informative annexes include a glossary and bibliography
Shoreline Metadata Profile Standards Development Process • Developed by the Marine and Coastal Spatial Data SC (formerly the Bathymetric SC), chaired by Anne Hale Miglarese • David Stein of Coastal Services Center, Charleston, South Carolina, and SC Executive Secretary, was principal developer of this standard
Shoreline Metadata Profile Standards Development Process Proposal Stage • Proposal submitted to FGDC Standards Working Group in Winter 1998 • Proposal Approved by SWG (Project Stage) (Draft Stage)
Shoreline Metadata Profile Standards Development Process Review Stage • Committee Draft submitted to SWG in 1999 • SWG Pre-public Review • Susan Stitt of BRD reviewed and validated Metadata elements • December 1999: SWG recommends CG approval to release standard for public review • January 2000: CG approves release of standard for public review
Shoreline Metadata Profile Standards Development Process Review Stage • April 2000: Standard released for public review • Public review promoted in Federal Register, E-mail discussion lists • July 2000: Public Review period closed

Shoreline Metadata Profile Standards Development Process Review Stage • August 2000: SC Editing Committee addressed public review comments • November 2000: Draft and adjudicated comments submitted to SWG for endorsement review • January 2001: Final draft standard sent to reviewers to resolve outstanding technical issues • February 2001: SWG votes to recommend that CG approve the Shoreline Metadata Profile for FGDC Endorsement
Shoreline Metadata Profile 1Currently, the Marine and Coastal Spatial Data SC is testing applicability of the Shoreline Metadata Profile on aerial photography from which shorelines are derived (raster); digital shoreline files (vector); and LIDAR data (point and grid)
