God Wants Us to Be Like His Son: • Romans 8:28-30—And we know that 1God causes aall things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are bcalled according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He aforeknew, He also bpredestinedto become cconformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the dfirstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He apredestined, He also bcalled; and these whom He called, He also cjustified; and these whom He justified, He also dglorified.

God Wants Us to Be Like His Son: • Romans 13:13-14—Let us 1abehave properly as in the day, bnot in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. 14 But aput on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh bin regard to its lusts.

  4. God Wants Us to Be Like His Son: • Col. 3:9-10—Do not lie to one another, since you blaid aside the old 2self with its evil practices, 10 and have aput on the new self who is being 1brenewed to a true knowledge caccording to the image of the One who dcreated him—

We Cannot Be Like Jesus in Everyway: • Jesus Is Immanuel (Matthew 1:23) • Jesus Is Perfectly Sinless (Hebrews 7:26) • Jesus Never Did or Thought Anything Wrong, But the Rest of Mankind Has Sinned (Romans 3:23) • John’s Instructions Are for Christians Who Have Sinned. (1 John 1:7-10) • Yet, God Expects Us to Be Like Jesus in Every Possible Way. (1 Peter 2:21) • 1 Peter 2:21—For ayou have been called for this purpose, bsince Christ also suffered for you, leaving you can example for you to follow in His steps,

Becoming Like Jesus • Jesus Became a Servant • Phil. 2:5-8—Have this attitude 1in yourselves which was also in bChrist Jesus, 6 who, although He aexisted in the bform of God, cdid not regard equality with God a thing to be 1grasped, 7 but 1aemptied Himself, taking the form of a bbond-servant, and cbeing made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, aHe humbled Himself by becoming bobedient to the point of death, even cdeath1on a cross. • Mark 10:45—“For even the Son of Man adid not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His 1life a ransom for many.”

  7. Jesus Served • Jesus Healed the Sick (Matt. 4:23) • Jesus Fed the Hungry (John 6:1-15) • Jesus Taught in Multitudes (Mark 6:30-34) • Jesus Washed the Feet of the Disciples (John 13:1ff.) • Jesus Died for Sinners (Mark 10:45) • Jesus Served Willingly and Without Complaint. • Ref. 1 Peter 4:9

  8. Jesus Sacrificed to Serve • Jesus gave up His place in heaven with God to serve. (John 3:13; 6:62; 16:28) • Jesus gave up His glory. (John 17:4-5) • Jesus gave up riches. (2 Cor. 8:9) • Jesus gave up His rights. (Matt. 17:24-27)

Are We Willing to Serve? • Give up a place of prestige to serve? • Give up glory to serve? • Give up wealth to serve? • Give up our rights to serve? • Do we want to serve or be served? • Do we serve others willingly, without grumbling and complaining? • How are we serving others? What are we doing?

Becoming Like Jesus • Jesus Became a Servant • Jesus Loved Everyone • John 3:16—“For God so aloved the world, that He bgave His 1conly begotten Son, that whoever dbelieves in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. • Romans 8:35—Who will separate us from athe love of 1Christ? Will btribulation, or distress, or cpersecution, or cfamine, or cnakedness, or cperil, or sword?

Jesus Loved Everyone • The scribes and Pharisees, even though they criticized Him. • Judas, even though he betrayed Him. • The apostles, even though they forsook Him in Gethsemane (Mk. 14:50) • Peter, even though he denied Him. • The Sanhedrin that condemned Him to death (Mk. 14:63-64) • The Roman soldiers who mocked Him, put the crown of thorns on His head, and drove those nails through His hands and feet. • Saul of Tarsus, even though he persecuted His church. • You and me, even when we were enemies.

Jesus Demonstrated His Love: • John 15:12-13—“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. • 1 John 3:16—We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

To be Like Jesus We Must Love Everyone • Romans 13:8-10—Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. 9 For this, “You shall not commitadultery, Youshall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall notcovet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love yourneighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Loving Others Like Jesus • Doing good to those who hate us. • Luke 6:26-27; Luke 23:34; • Doing no harm. • Romans 13:10; • Respecting a brother’s conscience. • Romans 14:14-16; • Treats another right. • 1 Cor. 13:4-8a • Bearing with another. • Eph. 4:2 • Speaking the truth in love. • Eph. 4:15 • Laying down our lives. • 1 John 3:16 • Meeting the needs of others. • 1 John 3:17-18

Becoming Like Jesus • Jesus Became a Servant • Jesus Loved Everyone • Jesus Had Compassion for the Hurting and Helpless • Matthew 14:14—When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick. • Matt. 15:32—And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, “bI feel compassion for the 1people, because they 2have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.”

  16. Compassion Moved Jesus • Heal the sick and suffering (Matt. 14:13-14) • Feed the hungry (Matt. 15:29-32) • Comfort the sorrowing (Luke 7:13) • Teach the multitudes (Matt. 9:36-38)

Compassion • The American Heritage Dictionary: “The deep feeling of sharing the suffering of another in the inclination to give aid or support or to show mercy.” • Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary: “…sympathetic consciousness of other’s distress together with a desire to alleviate it…” • Thayer: “prop. To be moved as to one’s bowels, hence to be moved with compassion, have compassion, (for the bowels were thought to be the seat of love and pity)…” • Vine: “To be moved as to one’s inwards (splanchan), to be moved with compassion, to yearn with compassion, is frequently recorded of Christ towards the multitude and towards individual sufferers…” • 1 Peter 3:8—To sum up, aall of you be harmonious, sympathetic, bbrotherly, ckindhearted, and dhumble in spirit;

  18. Do We Have Compassion? • Do we have compassion for those who have sinned against us and ask for forgiveness? • Matt. 18:21 ff.; James 2:13; • Do we have compassion to help those who are in need? • Luke 10:25-37; • Do we have compassion toward the perishing? • Jude 22-23; • Do we welcome penitent sinners back to the Lord? • Luke 15:25-32;

  22. Jesus Was Devoted to Prayer • Jesus was praying when baptized by John in the Jordan. (Luke 3:21-22) • Jesus prayed before feeding the multitudes • Feeding the 5,000 (John 6:11; Mark 6:41; Luke 9:16) • Feeding the 4,000 (Matthew 15:36; Mark 8:6) • Jesus was praying when He was transfigured on the mountain (Luke 9:28-36) • Jesus prayed when He instituted the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:17-20; Matt. 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25) • Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:39-46; Matt. 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42) • Jesus prayed while hanging on the cross. (Luke 23:34) • Jesus’ dying words were a prayer. (Luke 23:46)

Jesus Was Devoted to Prayer: • He made time to pray. • Mark 1:35— In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and bwas praying there. • Jesus sought solitude to pray. • After the feeding of the 5,000 (Matt. 14:23) • As His fame spread and the multitudes sought Him (Luke 5:15-16) • When He came to Caesarea Philippi (Luke 9:18) • When He went to Gethsemane to pray (Matt. 26:36-39) • Jesus Practiced What He Preached: • Matthew 6:5-6— “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to astand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners 1bso that they may be seen by men. cTruly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 6 “But you, when you pray, ago into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and byour Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Jesus Was Devoted to Prayer: • He made time to pray. • Jesus sought solitude to pray. • Jesus prayed for extended periods of time. • Before He selected the Twelve (Luke 6:12-16) • After feeding the 5,000 (Matt. 14:23-25) • Jesus prayed when He faced trials and temptations. • John 6:14-15; Matt. 14:23-25; Hebrews 5:7 • Jesus prayed with the proper priorities • Matthew 6:9-13; Matt. 26:39-42; • Jesus prayed often and habitually. • Luke 5:16

To Pray Like Jesus • We must make time to pray. • We must seek a place of solitude to pray. • We must spend time in prayer. • We must pray before making big decisions. • We must face our trials and tribulations with prayer. • We must pray with the proper priorities. • We must pray often and habitually.

Becoming Like Jesus • JESUS WAS COMMITTED TO HIS FATHER’S WORK • JESUS WAS COMMITTED TO HIS FATHER’S WORD • JESUS CHALLENGED THE UNAUTHORIZED TRADITIONS OF MEN • JESUS WAS PATIENT AND LONGSUFFERING WITH SINNERS • JESUS HATED SIN • JESUS ENDURED MISTREATMENT AND PERSECUTION • JESUS LIVED A SINLESS LIFE
