Plot tracking versus Protocol sample design

Explore the importance of Protocol Sample Design (PSD) and Plot Tracking for efficient forest data collection. Learn why PSD and plot tracking are essential, how they are connected, and how they can be better integrated to improve end-user understanding and monitoring capabilities. Understand the significance of documenting sampling protocols and plot selection processes for effective forest management.

  2. Acronyms anonymous • PSD = Protocol Sample Design • PPA = Plot Population Accounting • PGM = Plot Grid Management • PPA also = • iTracs = PNW Proposal • Database Flexibility / Redesign • SO = Sample Organization

  3. Acronyms anonymous • PSD = Protocol Sample Design • PPA = Plot Population Accounting • iTracs = PNW Plot Population Tracking • PGM = Plot Grid Management

  4. Acronyms anonymous • PSD = Protocol Sample Design • PPA = Plot Population Accounting • iTracs = PNW Plot Population Tracking • PGM = Plot Grid Management PSD ≠ Accounting / Tracking ≠ PGM

  5. PSD versus plot tracking PSD = Sampling protocol used on a plot. How it was collected in the field. Plot Tracking = How a plot was selected to be sampled. Tracks plot from initial selection to field collection to estimation.

  6. Why we need psd • Sampling protocols change. • Existing PSD tables in NIMS are not fully populated or documented. • End users need to know what they are using.

  7. Why we need plot tracking • We need a system that drives plot selection each year • Documentation and logic of that selection, including id of GIS layers… • We use more than one grid • Provides a system to monitor plot status • check if plots intended to go to the field actually did

  8. PSD + plot tracking How are they connected? • They should work together to describe which data items are collected for each plot and why • An integrated system • Sufficient documentation for end users

  9. PSD + plot tracking How can they be better connected? • PSD is on the IMworkplan. • Plot Tracking is on the ABworkplan.
