Our Work is Grounded in Culturally-Based Education “‘Culturally-Based Education’ (CBE) is an education model that is both academically effective and locally meaningful in light of a community’s aspirations for their children” -NIEA’s Native Education 101
History of Project-Based Learning (PBL) • Traditional Projects • A New Education Fad • But A Promising Instructional Method • Aligns with Indigenous Education Strategies • Processes, Procedures, Strategies, Community Education/Involvement
What is PBL? PBL is… • A primary instructional method that can be used in all subject areas • A group or individual activity • An extended learning experience with 7 key standards
7 Key PBL Standards • Challenging Problem or Question • Sustained Inquiry • Authenticity • Student Voice & Choice • Reflection • Critique & Revision • Public Product
Traditional Projects vs. Project-Based Learning Traditional Projects Project-Based Learning • Teacher-Centered • Teacher… • Crafts questions • Designs products • Investigates • Organizes • Assess • Student-Centered • With teacher guidance, students… • Craft questions • Design products • Investigate • Organize • Assess
Why CCSS? • Standards, in general, ensure consistent expectations • Provides educators with guidance on what content/skills to teach • The standards were created with college-and career readiness in mind
School Curricula w/ CCSS Implementation • Schools tend to deviate from language and culture revitalization / preservation efforts in order to avoid inadequate preparation for CCSS Assessments. • Our PBL framework is an attempt to begin correcting this problem.
PBL: Challenging Problem or Question • After viewing several images and reading a typical children’s article on Thanksgiving, students will share their personal understanding of Thanksgiving and any questions they have about the history of the holiday. • Posed question: What does Thanksgiving mean to Native Americans and how does this differ than the popularly accepted story?
Authenticity & Student Voice/Choice • Students should first craft their own narrative of Thanksgiving • Students reflect (journal) on each reading and the significance to themselves, classmates, and society • Students choose the format through which they share their new or revised understanding of Thanksgiving history
acc Reflection • Students reflect and journal about their own changes in perception of Thanksgiving history • Students reflect and share their thoughts about how Thanksgiving is represented in mainstream media and how it marginalized Native American history • Metacognition: Students think about their own thinking through this PBL process
Critique & Revision • Share and revise each other's work according to a rubric • A good point to practice analysis • Formative / Summative Assessment
