  2. Objectives • express your concept of the Church • explain that the Church is a mystery • identify scriptural images of the Church • terms to know- Church, mystery, Communion of Saints

  3. Mystery? • Mystery of the Pyramid

  4. Mystery • compile a list of shows, books, movies that are a mystery. • Mysteries that we encounter in shows/movies/books are presented to be solved • We enjoy the challenge to try to solve it • Our faith states that a mystery is NOT to be solved but to be experienced or entered into • We will never be able to fully understand it

  5. People of God • Church is the means and goal of God’s plan for us. • Church means “ Convocation” or people called together. • disciples- all those who believe in him • Communion of Saints- community of disciples

  6. Who is Jesus to You? • What does an extension chord do? • Can anyone explain why an extension is a symbol for the Church • - the Church extends the power of Jesus through time & space.

  7. Images of the Church • Objective- SWBAT explain and describe the importance of each image and how they contribute to our FAITH

  8. The Body of Christ • Each part of the body has a specific function • Our bodies are composed of all 3 parts or members • Each member needs one another • It can’t survive alone or do the work of others • This image says that - ALL members of the Church need one another and Christ is close to us, love us as he loves himself. • teaches us we are a close- knit community

  9. Temple • A sign of God’s presence among the Jewish people • Place where we pray and worship • Jesus began the Church • Each stone is important because each stone contributes to the whole • Without each stone, it would not be complete. It would be flawed.

  10. Bride of Christ • Like a bride and groom, Christ and the Church have a deep permanent love • Church gives us spiritual life & teaches us • In heaven the Church will be united with God. • This image stresses God’s LOVE for us.

  11. The Vine and the Branches • Jesus is “the VINE” • Members are the “BRANCHES” • We are a healthy branch that spreads • We recognize “Gods Goodness” and share it with others • Like the vine, when we are close to Jesus we bear much fruit.

  12. The Leaven • What makes bread grow? • Jesus spreads through the world like YEAST, it makes us grow • We are His Leaven, working to change the world into a better place. • We are like the Leaven when we proclaim the kingdom with our lives • “Spread God’s message”

  13. The Sheepfold • Jesus is the “Good Shepherd” esus lays because he lays down his life for us • His kingdom is like a sheepfold • Jesus is like the gate for the sheep, only through Him can we enter the kingdom • He guides us in the right direction

  14. Mary • The BEST image of the Church • Mother of Jesus • Qualities of Mary are found in the Church: humility, obedience, love, and compassion • By being obedient to God, She made it possible to receive eternal life.

  15. Objective • describe the role of the SPIRIT in the Church.

  16. Directions • Partner up ( teacher will assign you) • Alternate reading the paragraphs between partners (2 paragraphs each) • Answer questions on the board in your composition book.
