  2. Bullying vs Mistreatment • Is repeated • Intended to cause harm/intimidate • Always an imbalance of power • Isolated incident • Could be unintentional • Can occur between equals

  3. What to Watch For • Drop in grades • Changes in behavior/lack of interest in activities • School avoidance • Feeling isolated, alone • Changes in friends • Sadness/isolation • Anger, irritability, eating/sleeping changes • Physical symptoms(headaches, stomachaches) • Suicidal thoughts/depression

What Parents Can Do • Listen to your child and reassure him/her that they do not deserve to be bullied • Help your child practice appropriate responses to bully behavior (Firm response, ignore, avoid, humor) • Help your child choose activities they enjoy and where they are most likely to make friends • Notify school personnel if bullying is taking place at school or on the bus • Talk to your child about the importance of speaking up against bullying and not being a bystander • Role model acceptance/tolerance/inclusion • How to deal with a bully: • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFAUwxvD3J8

What Happens When A Bully Incident is Reported? • Grade Level Dean will investigate by: • Interviewing the victim • Interviewing the bully • Interviewing all witnesses • Consulting with the grade level counselor • Possible actions include but are not limited to: • Parent notification • Counseling support for the victim • Counseling intervention for the bully • Disciplinary consequences for the bully(detention, suspension, etc.) • Restorative Practices • Confidentiality laws prevent LCPS from discussing disciplinary actions with anyone other than the parent of the student receiving the consequences.
