  2. What is a slab? • A flat piece of clay • Examples: • Platters, wall pieces, sculptural pieces, expressive forms

  3. Steps to Follow • Take a lump of wedged clay and press it flat with the heel or palm of your hand • Turn the slab over and place it between 2 parallel guide sticks (wooden slats) • Slats help you maintain same thickness throughout the slab as you roll and flatten • Use rolling pin and roll slowly back and forth over clay • Turn and reverse the flattened slab once or twice during rolling process • Pierce air bubbles with a needle tool • To make small slabs slice slabs with wire • Can use soft or hard slabs

  4. Texture and Design • To create textured slabs by rolling out your clay over a patterned surface such as lace, burlap, straw matting, or any other textured material

  5. Safety • Keep your fingers out of the way when you are cutting clay slabs
