  4. Nausea, Vomiting, and/or Diarrhea · These intestinal disorders are generally viral in nature and self limiting, lasting 48-72 hours. · Do not eat or drink anything for 4-6 hours then start with sips of clear liquids (water, Gatorade, ginger-ale, non-citrus jello, etc.). If after 12 hours of clear liquids your symptoms have abated, increase intake to include full liquids (soups, soft boiled eggs) and gradually work up to a bland diet (toast, bananas, cottage cheese, rice, boiled chicken). One form of this “diet” is called the BRAT Diet. It is an acronym that stands for … Bananas - Rice (white) - Applesauce - Tea and Toast. · Many people can temporarily lose the ability to digest milk sugar for 1-2 weeks after an episode of gastroenteritis.  Avoid milk products, greasy or fried foods, and spices until you are feeling better - and resume them gradually, as tolerated. · If you have fever over 100.4 F, bloody diarrhea, worsening abdominal pain, or other concerns, contact UNC-CH Campus Health Services at 966-2281 or go to the emergency room.
