Batting Average • The total amount of hits divided by the total number of at bats. • Walks, hit by pitch or Sacrifices do not count as an at bat. • Typically, a good batting average for the year is over .300 • Magglio Ordonez 2007 • 216 Hits /595 At-Bats= .363 • Richie Sexson 2007 • 89 Hits /434 At-Bats= .205
On-Base Percentage • Total number of hits + the number of walks + Hit by Pitch divided by At Bats + Walks + Hit by Pitch + Sacrifice Flies • Typically a good On-Base percentage is .400 • David Ortiz 2007 • 182 Hits, 111 Walks 3 Sacrifice flies out of 549 At-Bats. • (182+111+HBP)/ 549+111+HBP+3 = .445 • How many times was David Ortiz Hit by a pitch in 2007? • 4 HBP
