Role of Automation in the Testing Pyramid What is the test automation pyramid? Carrying out automation in the testing pyramid provides a tactical pathway to carry out software testing activities in a streamlined manner. It maintains a fine balance between testing techniques, thereby ensuring that each of these techniques is strategically worked out in the quality assurance process. A synergy between the different layers of testing is achieved by the software development team by leveraging the pyramid structure. The bottlenecks in the software development process are strategically worked out and solved by the test pyramid platform. Efficient tests are created and the quality is also increased accordingly. The time and resources that are being used on testing are also properly balanced by teams. Following are the three important tiers of the test automation pyramid: 1. Unit tests: Unit tests lay the foundation of the pyramid and hence automation in the testing pyramid relies on the efficient functioning of unit tests. Each unit of code is assessed to know whether it is operating as intended. Bugs are identified early through the unit testing process, so that issues can be identified and rectified by developers, before moving to the next phases of testing.
2. API and service tests: These tests constitute the middle-tier. The interaction between various application components is analyzed by these tests. In order to make sure that the application functions reliably and cohesively, the seamless integration and communication between different software parts is assessed by API and service tests. It serves as a bridge between unit tests and user interface tests. 3. User Interface (UI) tests: The apex of the pyramid is occupied by end-to-end tests. Fundamental user interactions are simulated by these tests and thus the entire user journey is covered. The user experience is properly assessed by these tests, but, it is considered to be comparatively slower. The importance is acknowledged by placing it at the top of the pyramid while making sure that the testing efforts are focused on the stable foundation.
