Investigating the potential for carpet reuse and recycling in Dundee: Clean Close Company Robert Crow, School of Contemporary Sciences, University of Abertay Dundee, Bell Street, Dundee DD1 1HG Introduction The Clean Close Company Ltd (CCC) is a social enterprise based in the Stobswell area of Dundee, that provides a starting point for unemployed people to re-enter modern society with self respect and earning potential. Services offered include: • Graffiti removal • Carpet cleaning and house clearances for local authorities or housing associations • Grounds maintenance for domestic and commercial users Methodology 85 companies were invited to complete an online questionnaire from a link highlighted in the invitation email. 21 companies participated in the survey with the response rate a little lower than anticipated. Objectives Review the carpet waste volumes that could be cleaned or refurbished in Dundee with a focus on sectors that have buildings with a high carpet turnover Identify the requirements of a collection service for carpets within the local area Investigate the business space that would be required to develop a carpet recycling business Evaluate the technology that is required to clean or refurbish carpet so it can be sold as quality product Results Recommendations • Obtain additional carpet cleaning equipment to supplement existing machinery and chemicals • Recruit an experienced carpet fitter to train apprentices to an appropriate standard • Market the service using a website and also a showroom within the local area • Operate a vehicle to collect carpets for the cleaning facility and delivery to clients • Find a suitable facility to house the carpet recovery operations Conclusions • Carpet tiles and carpets are being diverted from landfill • Training opportunities have been given to people who would have otherwise been supported by the social system • The company is now reviewing carpet shredding technologies for future business developments
