  3. Assyria Timeline Four kings of Judah are included: Uzziah (good), Jotham (OK), Ahaz (horrible), and Hezekiah (good) We are talking about Ahaz. He was no good (II Kings 16)

Isaiah 33 The Trouble:1Woe to thee that spoilest, and thou wast not spoiled; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! when thou shalt cease to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled; and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee. Verse 1 shows that the God of Justice is offended by injustice and will punish. The description is of a classic bully, like the Farkas kid in the movie, Christmas Story. Ralphie Farkas

  5. Isaiah 33 God’s justice will repay. Matt 7:1-2; 12 Here, the immediate context is of Assyria’s coming invasion of Judah. In another 100 years, it will be Babylon’s turn. The promise is that each will be defeated and looted in the end. Meanwhile, God uses each to bring His Chosen People to cry out to Him. The principle is exerted again as Rome is plundered by barbarians, Napoleon’s army trudges back from Russia in ruin, Nazi Germany is bombed into rubble and the Japanese Empire is nuked. 2 Kings 19:32-37; Dan 5:25-31

  6. Isaiah 33 The Prayer: 2O LORD, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble. It is OK to remind the Lord of our relationship with Him, and of our feeble efforts at keeping our end of the bargain. This is certain: He keeps His end. Isaiah 25:9; 30:18-10; 40:10; 51:5; 59:16 Nahum 1:7 Psalm 46:1 The Outcome: 3At the noise of the tumult the people fled; at the lifting up of thyself the nations were scattered. 4And your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpiller: as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them. In the night, while Sennacherib’s armies were surrounding Jerusalem, God’s Angels scared those armies to death, and they fled. The Jews were then able to gather up as much loot from their abandoned camps as they could carry, until all was gone...

  8. Isaiah 33 5The LORD is exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with judgment and righteousness. There is nothing like being in danger of death or defeat to remind us of our place. God is in Heaven; we want to be. What a stark reminder of His supremacy. What a stunning portent of His justice! Psalm 36:5-7 When reminded of this, it is always good to remind ourselves where “our bread is buttered”. 6And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure. To “know” is to see things as God sees them. Wisdom is knowing what to do. Stability is being forewarned enough to avoid some of the chaos the world has to offer. Prov. 8:10-11; Matt. 13:52

Isaiah 33 7Behold, their valiant ones shall cry without: the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly. 8The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth no man. 9The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits. The horrible thing about war is the disruption it causes. Nothing is the same in a war-scorched land. Of course, “war represents failure of diplomacy”; and then everybody pays. No one wins. Some merely survive. There are the dead. The wounded. Law takes a holiday. Cities are death-traps. Travel is perilous. Life is cheap; robbers have no honor. Everything that was beautiful is destroyed or overgrown. This is a warning to Israel, Judah and the Assyrians alike; and to us today.

Isaiah 33 10Now will I rise, saith the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself. 11Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall devour you. 12And the people shallbe as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire. It’s as if God is saying, “If only you’d have turned to Me, confided in Me, trusted in and obeyed Me, you’d have had my view of these events.” Instead, God looks down and sees the cheapening of life, so that the dead are like chaff in the wind; and the bodies are burned like so much debris, to rid the earth of them. What a tragedy rebellion is!

  11. Isaiah 33 13Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge my might. 14The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? 15He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; 16He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure. Again, these verses assure us that 1) nations can avoid the horrors of inhumanity if they’ll turn to God; and 2) individuals can be surrounded by the insulating comfort of God, come what may. He is saying beyond a doubt that He will take care of those who have faith in Him (belief, trust, obedience).

Isaiah 33 17Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.  Job 19:25-27 (a very ancient prophecy) Matt. 5:8 (straight from the Lord Himself) Heb. 11:8-10 (from the very earliest days of faith in God) Rev. 1:7 (all the way to the Apocalypse!) The point is, everybody – start now, BEFORE the chaos and judgment!

  13. Isaiah 33 18Thine heart shall meditate terror. Where is the scribe? where is the receiver? where is he that counted the towers? If that isn’t a subtle hint about 9/11 and the whole era we are in, I don’t know what is! This foretells the end of terrorism and war, but only when the Prince of Peace is ruling on the Earth. Where are those who plotted and calculated, who took hostages? Nowhere, when Jesus comes! 19Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand. No more foreigners or enemies when Jesus comes. We’ll all understand each other, and it’s NOT the Age of Aquariums 

Isaiah 33 20Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken. This is the time everyone should be looking forward to; but few are. Most refuse to investigate, or even listen. Most think things will always be more or less as they are now. It is for a thousand years, and it only gets even better after that (New Heaven and New Earth).

Isaiah 33 21But there the glorious LORD will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby. 22For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us. 23Thy tacklings are loosed; they could not well strengthen their mast, they could not spread the sail: then is the prey of a great spoil divided; the lame take the prey. 24And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity. The world done right. No war, no weapons, no corrupt politicians, no more sin. Isn’t it just like our God to give an encouraging word along with the message of foreboding?
