2. Project Development

3. The children started the project by documenting things they knew about firefighters.

4. The children experiment with colors to paint a fire.

5. The children play in the the block area with fire stations and fire trucks.

7. Project Activities

8. At the sensory table the children are squirting pretend flames with water and it slides down the Plexiglas as the water hits it. They pretend they are putting out fire like firefighters.

9. This is a visit from one of our local firemen. Here he is interacting with the children about smoke detectors.

10. During a visit from the firemen, the children put on of their helmets.

11. After that experience they were making helmets of their own.

12. The children enjoyed reading books about firefighters.

13. During this visit from the firemen, the children are getting hands on experience with nozzles, hand extinguishers and other tools off the fire truck.

14. The fireman gets dressed in his turnout gear in front of the children so they are not afraid of him when he is in full gear.

15. The children learn how to check the door for heat.

16. The children emulated firefighters while in the pretend center.

17. The children made their snack look like a fire truck.

18. The children were able to sit in a fire truck.

19. Skills & Knowledge

20. The children made flames for the firefighter to put out with his hose. They were also working on the letter F and the f sound is like the sound the water makes when coming out of the fire hose.

21. Extended learning took place when the children cut shapes to make their fire trucks. The children related shapes to parts of the fire truck like circles were wheels , rectangles were like a bed, and squares were the cabs.

22. The local fire department brought in a smoke house where the children practiced crawling low through the smoke and then climbing out a window.

23. This child is struggling to put on a firefighter outfit. He is getting ready to play in the pretend area. He used the knowledge he has learned so far to advance his learning. He knows that the firefighters have to put on their gear before they get into a fire truck.

24. Project Conclusion

25. The children will make a book to take home. Each will be personalized with pictures and and their own work. There are at least ten photos of each child's involvement. The pages of the book will be laminated for durability. Book cover

26. There will be a display in the hall with quotes from the children about the project next to each of their photo dressed as a firefighter.

27. My Educational Enhancement

28. Allowing the children plenty of time and opportunities to explore enhances learning. • The children gathered facts through careful observation of items around them.

29. The children need to describe and compares properties of objects. • “Children learn many things by imitating others.”(Kostelnik, Soderman, Whiren, 2011, p.50)
