  1. Russia at the Olympics

  2. Russia at the Olympics • Russia has competed at the modern Olympic Games on many occasions, but as different nations in its history. As the Russian Empire, the nation first competed at the 1900 Games, and returned again in 1908 and 1912.

  3. Russia at the Olympics • After the Russian revolution in 1917, and the subsequent establishment of the Soviet Union in 1922, it would be forty years until Russian athletes once again competed at the Olympics, as part of the Soviet Union at the 1952 Summer Olympics. Opening ceremony

  4. Russia at the Olympics • After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia competed as part of the Unified Team in 1992, and finally returned once again as Russia at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Talisman

  5. Russia at the Olympics • The Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, and Russia will host the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

  6. Russia at the Olympics • The 1980 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXII Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event celebrated in Moscow in the Soviet Union. In addition, the yachting events were held in Tallinn, and some of the preliminary matches and the quarter-finals of the football tournament were held in Leningrad, Kiev, and Minsk. The 1980 Games were the first to be staged in Eastern Europe.

  7. Russia at the Olympics • The United States and a number of other countries boycotted the games because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, though athletes from some boycotting countries participated in the games, under the Olympic Flag. This prompted the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics.

  8. Russia at the Olympics • Eighty nations participated — the smallest number since 1956. However, the nations that did compete had won 71% of the medals, including 71% of the gold medals, at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

  9. Russia at the Olympics • 36 World records, 39 European records and 74 Olympic records were set. In total this was more records than were set at Montreal. • At the closing ceremony, the Los Angeles city flag, rather than the United States flag, was raised to symbolize the next host of the Olympic Games, and the Olympic flag was handed over to the IOC President rather than to the mayor of Los Angeles. This was the first time that the Olympic Flag Handover took place during the closing ceremony.

  10. Russia at the Olympics • Russia has competed at the Paralympic Games as different nations in its history. As part of the Soviet Union, the nation competed at the 1988 Summer Games, and Winter Games. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia competed as part of the Unified Team in 1992, and for the first time as Russia at the 1994 Winter Paralympics.

  11. Russia at the Olympics • Russia will host the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi.
