  2. Where can we watch it? NBC (channel 5) and on nbcolympics.com When & Where Sochi, Russia along the Black Sea Coast. the second largest city of Krasnodar Krai. • February 7-23, 2014

  3. Sochi’s Story • Sochi was chosen on July 4, 2007 by the International Olympic Committee in Guatemala City. • Sochi won over Salzburg (Austria) and PyeongChang (Republic of Korea) by 51 votes.

  4. Sports in the Olympics (15) Men and women will compete in five Alpine skiing events • downhill: a steep descent against time • slalom: a short race featuring sharp turns around flags • giant slalom: longer, looser version of the slalom • super G: slalom race that is a bit faster and longer than the giant slalom • combined: one downhill run followed by two slalom runs; fastest combined time wins

The men compete in the following: • 10 km sprint • 12.5 km pursuit • 20 km individual • 4x7.5 km relay • 15 km mass start The women compete in the following: • 7.5k m sprint • 10 km pursuit • 15 km individual • 4x6 km relay • 12.5 km mass start The competitors have five bullets and five targets which are 50 meters away. Each miss in the individual event adds one minute to the athlete's final time. Mixed Relay (new)

  6. Men’s Events: • four-man men • two-man men Women’s Events: • two-man women The sleds must go down an icy track one at a time, reaching speeds of up to 90 mph. The team with the lowest time after two runs wins the gold.

  7. Men's events: 1.5-km sprint; 15-km classical; 50-km freestyle; team sprint; combined pursuit; and 4x10-km relay. Women's events: 1.5-km sprint; 10-km classical; 30-km freestyle; team sprint; combined pursuit; 4x5-km relay. Classical: skiers use a straight stride and must stay within the parallel tracks Freestyle: Contains speed skaters; skiers push off with each ski on each stride. Relay: Skiers must tap their partners so they can begin . Combined Pursuit: A classical race followed by a freestyle race

  8. Two teams of four players take turns sliding a 42- pound granite stones down a sheet of ice towards a bullseye. A team scores points when the stones are close to the bullseye, tee.

Then they must attempt to stick the landing. moguls: skiers individually race down a mountain covered in bumps that are 4 feet high.

  12. Men’s events: • Singles men Women’s Events • Singles women Mixed Event: • Doubles • Mixed Team Relay Athletes make four runs down the course on a sled face up over two days of competition. Men and women compete on the same track, but the women start the race at a point farther down the track.

  19. How the Winter Olympics will benefit Russia... • By the year 2014, a total of 183 infrastructure facilities will be constructed and modernized in Sochi. Which will help improve the quality life on Sochi residence. • The city of Sochi and the Southern Federal District will benefit from modern roads and railways, new transportation hubs, modernized engineering infrastructure, and increase in energy capacity by 2 to 5 times, modern hotels, and a rejuvenated coastline.

  20. Controversies • People are fighting over gay rights. • People are worried about the impact to the environment. • People want to do a boycott telling people to stay away from the Olympics.

  21. Preparations • Russia has spent around $50 billion on this year Winter Olympics. • Challenges : 1. Keeping the ice cold and the audience warm. 2. Being ready by having snow store just in case there’s not enough snow in thm e mountains. • There’s still construction going on, finishing the hotels and roads.

  22. Security • Thousands of soldiers will be in the events • Surveillance cameras/ Drones • Robots Also, They will be checking all communication: • Phones • Emails
