Alvah Bessie • 1904-1985 • American novelist and journalist • Wrote screenplays for Warner Brothers in the mid/late 1940’s • Career ended in 1947, imprisoned, blacklisted and named as one of Hollywood Ten
Herbert J. Biberman • 1900-1971 • Joined Theatre Guild in 1928 • Directed and wrote screenplays for B movies • 1947 accused of Communist activities • Sentenced to 6 months in prison in 1950 • Banished from Hollywood
Lester Cole • 1904- 1985 • Polish immigrant • Co- founded Screenwriters Guild in 1933 • Blacklisted in 1947 and sentenced to one year in prison • Taught screenwriting at University of California in Berkeley
Edward Dmytryk • 1908- 1999 • Director and editor • 1948 blacklisted in U.S. and moved to England • Returned to U.S. in 1951 and appeared before HUAAC (tried all the Hollywood Ten) • Dropped from blacklist in late 1951
Ring Lardner Jr. • 1915- 2000 • Began career as reporter for NY Daily • 1947 blacklisted and served a year in prison • Removed from blacklist in mid 1960’s • Fun Fact: In 1970 wrote a script for M*A*S*H
John Howard Lawson • 1894- 1977 • Fun Fact: Volunteer ambulance driver for Red Cross with Ernest Hemmingway • 1948 blacklisted and sentenced to one year in prison • Exiled to Mexico in 1953
Albert Maltz • 1908- 1985 • Playwright for Theatre Union • 1941 worked for Warner Brothers and Paramount • 1947 blacklisted and sentenced to one year in jail
Samuel Ornitz • 1890- 1957 • Writer • Board member of Screen Actors Guild 1933 • 1947- served a year in prison for contempt of court
Adrian Scott • 1912- 1973 • Refused to testify against HUAAC • 1950 sentenced to a year in prison
Dalton Trumbo • 1905- 1976 • Blacklisted in 1947 • Served one year in jail
Blacklisting • Hollywood Blacklisting began in 1947 when a group of ten Hollywood professionals were accused of incorporating Communism into their works. • All were sentenced to no more than a year in prison and were tried by the HUAAC.
