Union To defend and maintain the Constitution. Will invade the South to stop the Civil War. South To be allowed to create their own independent country. Will try to stop the North from invading the South. Union (North) Strategy vs. Southern (Confederate) Strategy
First Bull Run (The First Real Battle) • General Irvin McDowell: Commander of the Union Troops. • Felt he needed more time to train Northern Troops • The troops marched from Washington, DC to Manassas, Virginia (25 miles away) • General PGT Beauregard: Commander of the Confederate Army. Won at Fort Sumter. • Crowds gathered to watch the battle. • Union was defeated thanks to General Stonewall Jackson.
War In The West • Fighting In: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi • Union General: Ulysses S. Grant • Goal: To capture the Mississippi River. • First: Needed to capture Forts Henry and Donelson in Tennessee. • February 6, 1861: The Union Navy blew up Fort Henry. • Later: Fort Donelson was bombed by the navy.
Battle of Shiloh • Grant marched into Mississippi. • Confederate General: Albert Johnston tried to stop Grant. • Result: The Battle of Shiloh • Bloodiest single battle in American history up to this time. • Union won and killed General Johnston.
