Quiz/ Assessment Retake Protocol… • If you earn a 2 or a 1 on a quiz/assessment you may retake the quiz/assessment one time to boost your grade up to a maximum of a 3. • For example: If you take a quiz and earn a 2, then you retake that quiz and earn a 4, your grade will be boosted up to a 3. You only get ONE retake, so make it count. • This means if you earned a 3 or better you may NOT retake a quiz/assessment. • You will have ONE WEEK to retake a quiz or assessment or turn in any late work.

4. 14L – Counterargument Pre-Writing • Take the next 7 minutes to answer the following questions in complete sentences. • What is one of the arguments from the other side that you think you can disprove? • How can you disprove this argument? • How can you use this argument to support your stance? Turn it around and make it good for your side of the argument.

5. Page 14R Counterargument Paragraph Outline • Sentence #1: Bring up the other side’s argument and disprove it. (Others might think ______, but this is not true because ______.) • Sentences #2-3: Prove why this argument of the other side is not true. (Evidence) • Sentences #4-5: Use this new point to support your stance. {(Other side’s argument) actually supports students wearing/not wearing uniforms because_____.} • Last Sentence- Concluding sentence. (reword sentence #1, but make it sound like you have just won that point- why are you correct?)

Advanced Counterargument Paragraph Although others might think that students need to wear their own clothes to express themselves, but this is not true because students can express themselves with their personalities and behavior. Expressing oneself with the clothes they wear is simply a superficial way of showing who they really are. Students should show who they are by the way they act and treat others, which can easily be done while wearing a uniform. Expression of oneself actually supports that students should wear uniforms because it forces students to express themselves for who they really are and not just what they can afford to wear. Middle school students should wear uniforms, so that students can show their individuality with their personalities.

10. 15L- Conclusion Pre-Writing • Take the next 7 minutes to answer the following questions in complete sentences. • Did you prove that students should/should not wear uniforms? If so, how? • After hearing your arguments, what do you think Mr. Evans should do? • If your hook was a question, then answer it. OR… If your hook was not a question, then write a concluding sentence connecting it back to your hook.

12. Advanced Conclusion Middle school students should wear uniforms because they make everyone look the same, get students ready for the real world, and help students focus in class. Wearing uniforms is one less thing for students to worry about while getting ready for school in the morning. The current uniforms, consisting of blue collared shirts and khaki pants, are perfect for students who care about their education and their future. Mr. Evans should keep the current uniform policy in place at CRMA #4.Middle school students who want to succeed in life should wear uniforms with pride because it helps themselves, their parents, and their peers.

18. (16R) How to Fix a Run-On Sentence • A sentence is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. To express a complete thought, a sentence must say something that makes sense by itself. • Ted looked around the room. • John played hockey all day.

19. A run-on sentence is two or more complete sentences that are written as one sentence. • When the writer has joined two or more complete sentences with no punctuation mark between them. • When the writer has joined two or more sentences together using only a comma to separate them. • A run-on sentence is grammatically incorrect and must be corrected. Example: Jennifer and Jake ran a good race they tied for first place. John was speeding he got a ticket.

20. So how do we fix a run-on sentence? • There are 3 ways to fix a run-on sentence: • Turn the sentence into two sentences with a PERIOD and a CAPITAL letter. • Turn the run-on sentence into a compound sentence with a COMMA and a CONJUNCTION. • Place a SEMI-COLON and a LOWER-CASE letter where the first independent clause ends.

21. To correct a run-on sentence: You can make two separate sentences. • Jennifer and Jake ran a good race. They tied for first place. • John was speeding. He got a ticket.

22. To correct a run-on sentence: Or… You can make a compound sentence by adding a comma and a coordinating conjunction (For, and, but, nor, or, so, yet). A compound sentence must have a comma and the conjunction or it is still a run-on sentence. • Jake and Jennifer ran a good race, and they tied for first place. • John was speeding, so he got a ticket.

23. To correct a run-on sentence… • Or… break up the two independent clauses with a semi-colon and a lower-case letter. • Jake and Jennifer ran a good race; they tied for first place. • John was speeding; he got a ticket.

Must have… • Date (Upper left corner-Put the due date) • Your address under the date • The school’s address under your address • A greeting with a colon (Dear Mr. Evans:) • 1 introduction paragraph • 3 body paragraphs (3 reasons) • 1 counterargument paragraph • 1 conclusion paragraph • A salutation or closure with a comma (Thank you for your time,) • Your signature under the salutation • Your name neatly printed under your signature.

Formatting your Letter Tips to remember… • Follow the handout I gave you for formatting issues. • Follow the spacing on the handout I gave you. • Type or hand write very neatly. • Read and reread your final draft. Have a friend or parent read it over to catch any easily corrected errors. • Have your final draft (and any rough drafts you have written) ready to turn in on Wednesday!!! NO EXCUSES!!!

27. Things to Remember (page 17R)You can summarize this slide of notes. • FOLLOW THE OUTLINES!!!!!!!!!!! (They are online in case you need them.) • Don’t start your sentences with “so” or “well” or “also” or “and” • The thesis statement (the sentence written on your index card) should be the last sentence in your introduction paragraph, and it should be reworded as the first sentence of your conclusion. • It’s okay to start your introduction with a hook, but not a Yes/No question. • State your goal in your intro paragraph. • Each reason gets its own body paragraph, so you should only talk about one topic in each of the body paragraphs. • Wear vs. were • Students wear uniforms (as in plural uniforms) • Come see me on Friday afterschool if you are having trouble with any part of the essay. I will also be available all weekend via email. • Feel free to change your counterargument reason if you can’t seem to flip it to support your stance.

28. How Will I be Graded? • Neatness-- Letter is neatly handwritten or typed, clean, not wrinkled, and is easy to read with no distracting error corrections. It is done with pride. • Stance—The writer’s stance is clear throughout the entire essay/letter. • Support-- Ideas are expressed in a clear and organized fashion. It was easy to figure out what the letter was about. There are 3 clear reasons that support your claim. • Evidence– There is substantial and supportive evidence for each of your reasons. • Counterargument– The writer acknowledges support for the other side, disproves it, and turns it into a supportive reason for the writer’s claim. • Grammar & spelling (conventions)-- Writer makes little to no errors in grammar or spelling. • Organization– The paper flows smoothly from one paragraph to the next. (transitions)

A study conducted by the American Education Association showed that 80% of bullying is due to the way one dresses. Many times students are bullied because of the way that they dress. Different economic statuses allow some students to buy the latest fashion trends while others are forced to wear hand-me-downs, but uniforms allow all students to be equal. Uniforms make everyone look the same, so students do not pick on one another. Wearing uniforms will reduce bullying because students will all wear the same thing, creating equality among all students.

33. Types of Evidence (page 18R) You may summarize these notes. 1) Facts: The most frequent type of evidence in an essay is facts. Facts include names, dates, or specific events. When writing about literature, evidence takes the form of plot summaries or specific quotations. 2) Authoritative Opinions: Experts in the field about which you are writing provide supporting details and evidence for your thesis statement. The writer's opinion may also serve as an authoritative opinion if it is supported by facts. 3) Quotable Comments: quotable comments provide support for your argument but should not be overused. Be sure the quote emanates from an authoritative source and is not misleading. 4) Anecdotes: Anecdotes are humorous experiences that illustrate your point. In addition to supporting your argument, anecdotes can liven up an otherwise boring academic paper. 5) Clarifying Examples: Examples that clarify your points and support your thesis statement make great evidence.
