Background Requirements: Increase accessibility to FAOSTAT data • Improve system performance and efficiency • Strengthen FAOSTAT data exchange capacity • Add visualization and analysis tools Implementation: • Pilot application (FAOSTAT3) built using open-source software developed by FAO (FENIX). FAOSTAT3 is currently under evaluation • Links with the FAO Statistical Data Warehouse (under development)

  3. Comparative advantages Speed Improved performance to: • Create charts, maps or tables on-the-fly • Perform real-time calculations • Download large volumes of data

  4. Comparative advantages Flexibility • Handling large varieties of data • Ability to add/remove tools • Capacity to accommodate user requirements (e.g. new/modified features)

  5. Comparative advantages Analysis (Under Development) • FENIX includes R statistical package to expose statistical functions on the web • Designed to work with multiple databases (FAOSTAT, OECD, PSD, etc.) for cross-sectoral analyses • Highly customizable

  6. Comparative advantages Information Exchange • Data exchange using web services (Application Programming Interfaces - APIs) • Sharing of information products: ability to embed FAOSTAT dynamic maps, tables and chart in users’ websites

Comparative advantages Content • - FAOSTAT domains: • Agricultural production • Producer and consumer prices • Food and commodity balance sheets • Resources (land, fertilizers, pesticides) • Agricultural trade • Forestry production • Investment in agriculture • Population • Newly added domains: • Greenhouse Gases • Monthly Producer Prices • Links with other databases (under implementation) • IFPRI – ASTI database • USDA – Production, Supply & Demand (PSD)

  8. Comparative advantages Sustainability • Based on a software platform (FENIX) that uses Open Source technologies • FENIX is also used by other FAO applications • Agricultural Development Assistance Mapping (ADAM) • Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) • CountySTAT
