  2. Do you Need to Upgrade? • Win ME is not a Major Upgrade • Most Programs can be Downloaded • IE 5.5 • Windows Media Player 7.0 • Is Everything Running OK? • Do you use DOS Programs Frequently from a DOS prompt?

  3. Reasons to Upgrade • Game Features • Home Network Features • Home Video or Digital Camera Features • Some New System Tools • The Latest Home Computer OS

  4. Preparation for Installation • You don’t have to do any of this stuff • This maintenance should be done if upgrading or not on a regular basis • Installing Win ME over a previous Windows version that has problems will likely lead to more problems with Win ME

  5. Preparation - Essentials • Back Up • Back Up • Back Up

  6. Preparation - Basics • Turn off Screen Saver • Delete Old C:\Windows\Temp files over one week old • Virus Program • Update Virus Program Data files • Scan HDD with Virus Program • Run System and IE Repair Tools

  7. Preparation - Basics • Flash your BIOS if you know how • Run Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor • Check Registry • Norton Clean Sweep • MS RegClean 4.1a • MS ScanReg / fix / opt (run from DOS)

Back up the Registry (Optional) • Back up with RegEdit to a location of your choice to make a .REG file • Back up with Cfgback utility (Win95) • Copy System.dat and User.dat from DOS or the Safe Mode • MS does not want you to mess with these files. Win Me has better tools to back up important system files.

  9. Clean Boot (Optional) • Copy Win ME files to HDD (Optional) • Turn off Autoloading Programs (Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Information / Tools / System Configuration Utility / Selective Startup)

  10. Installation • Insert the CD (not necessary if files were copied to HDD) • Autorun or Run Setup • Read the Contract and Privacy Statement (?!) • Type in Product Key • Have a floppy disk handy • Have Driver Disks available if needed

  11. During Installation • Kick Back • Make a Sandwich • Read the Install Screens • Read the ME book

  12. Post Upgrade • Look for Windows Updates on WWW • Enable Virus Program • Run Virus Program for first time, Choose Inoculate, NOT Fix • Turn on Screen saver • Enable Autoload Programs with System Tools

  13. Last Things • Copy Cab and driver files from Win ME CD to your HDD - Optional • if you have space • if you have not already done it and • if you want to • Check your older programs to see if they work - upgrade if they do not • Defrag
