Movie Critique • A movie critique ultimately names specific things that make a movie work (or not) so that creators can improve.
Prompt • Write a critique about a film that you have seen. Evaluate based on characterization, plot, and theme.
Movie Critique Outline • I. Introduction -Hook (must get the reader’s attention) - film title -director -Why is this film being reviewed (timeliness, strong message, etc.) -thesis (opinion + reasons)
Body: Summary • II. Body • -A. Plot Summary Topic Sentence • Summarize film (literal translation only) • Do not plagiarize. This must be in your own words. • No more than one paragraph
Body: Characterization • -B. Characterization Topic Sentence • Analyze use of characters (3 characters) • Are the characters believable? Relatable? • How do these characters affect us as the audience? • Ex: The character of Forrest Gump pushes the audience to sympathize for Gump, therefore making the viewers to root for him throughout the film. • 1 paragraph per character
Body: Theme • -C. Theme topic sentence • Identify theme (message or moral of the story) • Themes are full, specific statements (love is not a theme) • Provide evidence in film that supports theme • 1 paragraph
Conclusion • Closing -did the film achieve its goals? -movie strengths/weaknesses -recommendation (audience and reason)
