A preposition is a word that shows how a noun or pronoun relates to some other word in a sentence. • The book is on the shelf. • Commonly used prepositions include about, above, across, at, before, behind, but,by, down, during, except, for, from, in, into, like, near, of, over, past, since, through, to, toward, under, with. • I have been here since September. A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition and the object of the preposition (a noun or pronoun) and any words that modify it. The cat is by the fireplace. • Prepositional phrases can function as adjectives and adverbs.
