  6. Catholic Students - Interviews • Can be persecuted by protestant students for varying religious ideals • Have special dietary needs during Lent

  7. Catholic Students • Almost all Catholic Observances line up with Protestant Observances • Students over the age of 14 are required to abstain from consuming meat on the Fridays during Lent • Students may participate in Fasts

  8. Pentecostal Students • The students are to dress modestly • Girls • Skirts or dresses below the knees • No necklines below the collar bone for ladies • Sleeves between shoulder and elbow • No make up or jewelry • Must not wear hair short • Boys • Pants all year • Shirts with sleeves • Are often bullied for their attire, especially girls • Cannot play certain sports due to the uniforms • Cannot do certain activities due to the attire

  9. Jewish Students • Abide by kosher laws • Have many religious observances that do not line up with Christian holidays • Rosh Hashanah • Yom Kippur • Passover • Can be persecuted by Christian Students for religious reasons • Can be bullied due to stereotypes

  10. Muslim Students • Have long periods of Fasting • Ramadan • Have dietary laws • Halāl • Harām • Have a dress code in some sects • Jalabib • Veils • can attract offensive comments and inapproprate comments • Often alienated due to the connotation of terrorism • May have uncommon names

  11. Mormon Students • Attacked for their views on Jesus by Christian students • Bullied for beliefs that are odd to other religions • Temple Garments • Modest Dress • Some families adhere to strict rules on consuming caffeine, not an official law

  12. Hindu Students • Have religious observances every month but December • Some sects are vegan, vegetarian, or just against cow meat and milk

  13. Over Arching Issue • Bullied for being different • Different views • Different culture • Different food • Different clothes • Different holidays

  14. What can be done? • Do not have foods in the classroom that some students are forbidden from eating • Do not have activities that will exclude certain students • Do not tolerate bullying • Do everything to create an environment that is welcoming to other cultures • Find ways to educate students about other religions
