PROVERBS 19:1,22CHARACTER & WEALTH • Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool. What is desired in a man is steadfast love, and a poor man is better than a liar. • Wealth is not righteousness • Liars are disobedient • God values character not wealth • Believers should be consistent regardless • And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” Matthew 8:20
PROVERBS 19:4,6,7WORLDLY RESPONSE TO MONEY • Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend. Many seek the favor of a generous man, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts. All a poor man’s brothers hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He pursues them with words, but does not have them. • Favoritism based on money is wrong. • Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. James 2:5-6
PROVERBS 19:17GODLY RESPONSE TO MONEY • Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed. • And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ Matthew 25:40 • If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:3 • God evaluates the action & the motive
PROVERBS 19:5,9,28ALL LIARS DESERVE DEATH • A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape. A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish. A worthless witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity. • “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Exodus 20:16 • God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Numbers 23:19
PROVERBS 19:2,27LIFE WITHOUT GOD’S KNOWLEDGE • Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way. Cease to hear instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. • Epistemology: What is truth & how do you know it? • Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Romans 10:1-4
PROVERBS 19:8,16,20LIFE WITH GOD’S KNOWLEDGE • Whoever gets sense loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will discover good. Whoever keeps the commandment keeps his life; he who despises his ways will die. Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. • You are responsible to listen, learn, repent, and live regardless of your circumstances. • How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. Psalm 119:9
PROVERBS 19:25DIFFERENT STUDENTS • Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; reprove a man of understanding, and he will gain knowledge. • Scoffer & Simple = Unregenerate • Man of understanding = Regenerate • All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
PROVERBS 19:11,19RESPONSES TO OFFENSE • Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. A man of great wrath will pay the penalty, for if you deliver him, you will only have to do it again. • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:22-24 • Those with the Holy Spirit live differently
PROVERBS 19:3,29PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY • When a man’s folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the LORD. Condemnation is ready for scoffers, and beating for the backs of fools. • Your response to circumstances and your destiny depend on your response to the gospel. • For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 • Someone will be condemned, beaten & die: you or Christ
PROVERBS 19:13,14THE FAMILY • A foolish son is ruin to his father, and a wife’s quarreling is a continual dripping of rain. House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. • “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise)” Ephesians 6:2 • However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33
PROVERBS 19:18,26PARENTS’ & CHILDREN’S RESPONSIBILITY • Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not set your heart on putting him to death. He who does violence to his father and chases away his mother is a son who brings shame and reproach. • Loving parents discipline their children. • For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” Hebrews 12:6 • Each person is held accountable for their actions regardless of their parents.
PROVERBS 19:15,24SLOTH • Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger. The sluggard buries his hand in the dish and will not even bring it back to his mouth. • Physically & Spiritually • For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 2 Peter 1:5-7
PROVERBS 19:21,23SOVEREIGNTY, CONTENTMENT, SAFETY • Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand. The fear of the LORD leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm. • you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”; fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:9-10
