Education Context • 9th-12th grade school located in rural Pennsylvania • population of approximately 600 students • blend of economically disadvantaged students and students from upper middle class families.
Organization • Bradford Area High School was founded in 1924 • Vocational technology department to accommodate students pursuing careers in auto mechanics, and carpentry. • Purpose of the organization is to educate the students of the community to a high standard.
FuturingWhat is it? Why use it? How does it impact education? The What… Futuringis the systematic planning process that enables organizations to proactively prepare for what lies ahead, thus turning worries and reservations about lies ahead into opportunities for growth, and bringing the future into better focus. The Why Futuring identifies several possibilities, or scenarios, by looking at the organization’s environment (consumers, competitors, & community) and anticipating how changes in these may impact its future practices. This better prepares the organization to adapt to change and continue to grow. The Impact Engaging in futuring exercises will help educational leaders/organizations develop curriculum that maximizes instruction on skill sets that will be important to future jobs thereby better preparing our students for life beyond the classroom.
The Role of Environmental Scanning in FuturingEnvironmental scanning is a method used to assess an organization’s environment (i.e. its consumers, competition and community) and help the organization develop scenarios and the strategies necessary to reach the organization’s identified vision. • External Environment: • Consumers (students) • Competition (charter or private vs. public school) • Community (tax payers, stakeholders, etc.) Environmental Scanning to collect data on performance, trends, etc. Organization’s use of futuring & development of scenarios • Internal Environment: • School mission & vision • Strengths • Weaknesses Strategic plans to prepare for scenarios
MOBILE COMPUTING • PCMag Encyclopedia defines mobile computing as “Using a portable computing device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone.” • David Nagel (2013) stats that already “Most elementary and secondary students are using mobile devices in their studies, either in the classroom or at home.” • Mobile computing Can be a game changer in education. “Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a digital makeover for California's school textbooks. The future, as he saw it, was ebooks. They are portable, easy to update, and cost-effective, and can be read on netbooks, e-readers, laptops, and more. “(2013)
DATA ANALYSIS Data and the analysis of that data is used to help determine the weaknesses of a specific student or a group of students and what can be done to help those students receive higher scores on the tests. “Through collaborative reflection, you “study” the feedback offered by your data and begin to understand when to stay the course and when to make changes. “ (Learning Point Associates 2001)
Scenarios • Hypothetical situations that help institutions prepare for what may occur in the future • Data collected from scanning the current environment and future trends will help to create possible scenarios.

Vision of Education 2017Data Analytics • Data collection will be used more specifically in the coming years. • Aimee RogstadGuidera, executive director of the Data Quality Campaign states that “State leaders increasingly recognize that empowering parents, educators and policymakers with the right data at the right time in the right format better ensures our young people graduate from high school prepared for postsecondary education and careers.” (2013)
Vision of Education 2017Mobile Computing • Mobile technology will allow students to have personal access to textbooks and applications specifically designed to use in the classroomand achieve greater results • Tablets vs. Textbooks from the website www.procon.org states that “Students who used an interactive, digital version of an Algebra 1 textbook for Apple's iPad in California's Riverside Unified School District in 2012 scored 20 percent higher on standardized tests vs. students who learned with print textbooks.” (2013) • In 2017 The classroom will work to integrate tablets and smartphones more and more into the classrooms.
