What is Group Work? • Students collaborate with each other by sharing ideas, communicating, and making decisions. • Students can both teach others and learn from each other • A powerful tool for teaching when used properly!
When to use it: Anytime! • Start of the lesson • Find out prior knowledge • During the lesson • Sharing ideas, peer teaching • End of the lesson • For students to make own conclusions about what they’ve learned
Preparing the Lesson: • Have a clear objective (Learning Outcome) for the activity • Be flexible with the amount of time you give the groups
Creating the Groups • Keep the LO in mind – what are you trying to have the students achieve during this lesson, what’s the best way to get there? • Manageable quantity of groups • Keep groups small - each member is an active participant in the activity • Give each individual a job • Ex: organizer, recorder, spokesperson, researcher, etc.
