Revelation 20 – The 1000 Year Reign of Jesus Christ [Pre-millennial View] • Note: The 1000 year reign of Christ is only stated inRev 20, and here 6 times. Thus, many reject it and OT promises by God to establish His kingdom on earth as promised to Israel. As a result there are many different non-literal interpretations of Rev 20 to explain this 1000 year reign away. They include: • - Postmillennialism: Church ushers in the age of bliss, after which Christ returns • - Amillennialism [more recent]: millennium is the church age; Satan was bound at the Cross; Christ returns only to judge the world. [Kingdom theology, liberation theology] • - Premillenialism [most literal]: • Historical: Rev 6-19are historical and symbolically refer to the Church • Covenant: 1000 year reign is to offer salvation to more people • Theocratic: God will fulfill OT promises that David’s throne will rule forever and gentiles will be blessed. Thus, Christ will return after the tribulation and reign on earth for 1000 years – interpret Rev 20as literally as possible. • Note: the use of “and” throughout indicates action in logical order [Walvoord]. • Rev 19-20 Events: literal, therefore actual events • Event 1: Christ’s Second Coming with all His saints (“1st Resurrection”) • Event 2: Beast and false prophet into lake of fire • Event 3: Armies destroyed David Tye
Last week: Rev. 19: 19-21 19And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled to make war against Him who sat upon the horse, and against His army. 20And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. 21And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat upon the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh. Rev. 20: 1-3 1And I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3and threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he should not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time. Rev. 20: 4 4And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark upon their forehead and upon their hand; and they came to life [“lived”] and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. Rev. 20: 5-6 5The rest of the dead did not come to life [“live”] until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years. Rev. 20: 7-9 7And when the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, 8and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore. 9And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them.
