Objective of the talk • In this talk we try to give a hands on experience on how to write a strong tempus proposal from various aspects. We will also outline some of the difficulties we faced and some of the mistakes and how to avoid them. Whenever appropriate we will use our proposal as an example.
Summary Of Our Project • JEP31005-2003Open Learning Models and Technologies • Its main objective is to produce 8 online Masters degree courses in computer science along with the associated online environment. • Grant Holder: University Of Alicante (Spain) • Project Coordinator: Dr. Abdel-Alah Ayyoub; Arab Open University. • Consortium additionally includes PSUT, UJ, AIESEC, IDEC, ORT.
Main factors in writing a Tempus Proposal • A project with well defined outcomes that match the national priorities set forth by TEMPUS for the partner country which in our case was: CD Curriculum Development * UM University Management IB Training Courses for Institution Building
Main factors in writing a Tempus Proposal • A consortium that is: • In line with the rules of TEMPUS • the roles of each member are well thought of, and matches the goals of knowledge dissemination from EU countries to partner countries. • Grant holder should be a University in EU countries.
Main factors in writing a Tempus Proposal • A logical frame work matrix and a work plan that : • Shows how the main outcomes will be satisfied. • Clearly shows the intermediate outcomes, who is responsible and the duration. • Reasonable in terms of duration and consistent with the overall division of tasks. • Clear indicators of progress.
Main factors in writing a Tempus Proposal • A Budget that is: • In line with the rules of TEMPUS with appropriate division of budget headings • The budget items match the overall project goals and the work plan. • Consistent with the division of tasks • Leave some administration cost for the Grant holder.
Main factors in writing a Tempus Proposal • In summary a well written consistent proposal that shows a clear understanding of the overall goals and regulations of Tempus. • Note that filling out the online Tempus form and understanding the regulations is by no means a trivial matter. It is a good share of the overall effort for the project.
Difficulties we faced in writing our Proposal • Finding an appropriate consortium. We didn’t have access to a database of potential partners so we did it through numerous emails. • I think the first thing to do after formulating an idea of a project is to contact interested partners. • Rules and regulations and how to write a proposal that will satisfy the goals while not violating these rules.
Mistakes to avoid • If we had to do it all over….. • We would be more careful in the budget headings and how the budget will be spent. It is very hard to change after the proposal is submitted and approved. • We were lucky in finding a suitable consortium but try to contact the potential consortium members well in advance. • Read the Rules and guidelines very carefully and take your time to understand all of what is written.
A status update of our project. • We established an online conference for the whole consortium. • Plans for 3 courses are in the approval process. • LMS identified and the other VLE components identified/being built • We are inline with work plan and LFM.
