  1. Eureka! What Makes Test Prep Good? Sound Practices from Eureka

  2. Only as Good as the Tutor • Tutor hiring and training should be a top priority for any prep company. Eureka tutors go through 2 interviews that focus on testing, communication, and tutoring methods. Once tutors are hired, they then receive 30 hours of training, using our curriculum. • High scores and Ivy League educations do not necessarily lead to quality tutors. Hiring only 800 scorers from Harvard is a great marketing tool, but turning away those applicants if they can’t help students is much more important.

  3. Customized Approach • The tests are standardized, but the students aren’t. Programs should be adapted toward students’ strengths and weaknesses. Even classes should be customized by diagnostic testing whenever possible. • Tutors should be matched with students based on abilities, interests, personality and/or other factors. Students should be able to request instructor changes if they aren’t happy since students work harder with tutors who meet their needs.

  4. Proprietary Materials • The best materials are easy to understand. They should introduce useful and easily repeatable strategies and be geared toward score improvement. • By creating materials, a company gains a much better understanding of the tests and can create curriculum designed to help different students in different ways. The College Board and ACT create tests, but tutors and companies create higher scores. • The College Board and ACT study materials are designed to reinforce the stance that the SAT and ACT test curriculum knowledge rather than strategies. This is untrue and, if followed, makes score improvement more difficult.

  5. If Tom is twice as old as Linda, and Linda is 4 years younger than Karen, and Karen is one-third as old as Brian who will be twice as old as Tom will be next year, how old is Tom now? • 26 • 22 • 18 • 14 • 10 I didn’t know there would be math today!

  6. Safe Principles • Companies should conduct rigorous background checks on all prospective hires. Eureka runs county and national criminal (felony and misdemeanor) background checks on all incoming staff. • Eureka tutors are not allowed to use social networking sites to become “friends” with students. While a friendly relationship is important and effective, there should be no blurring of the lines.

  7. Common Myths Myth #1: Coffee is made from beans... Nope – they are actually seeds from coffee cherries Myth #2: There are 50 states in the U.S.A… Technically there are only 46. Four consider themselves commonwealths Myth #3: The QWERTY keyboard was designed with efficiency in mind… Actually, just the opposite is true. It prevented jammed typewriters. Myth #4: Some people are just bad test takers… Absolutely not true. Some people would simply rather believe that than work at it.
