Conquest of the Italian Peninsula • Rome began expanding its territories to prevent attacks from enemies and to gain wealth and resources • By 272 BC Rome controlled all of the Italian Peninsula
The Punic Wars • After fighting the three Punic Wars with Carthage, Rome gained new provinces in Africa and Spain
A “Roman Lake” • By 133 BC, Rome controlled nearly all of the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea • Called the land the sea the “Roman Lake”
Summary • The Romans conquered neighboring peoples until, in 272 BC, they controlled all of the Italian Peninsula • They then fought the Punic Wars to win Rome’s first overseas province, in northern Africa • Roman conquest continued until Rome controlled the entire Mediterranean region • Rome became the world’s most powerful state at that time
