U.S. ATLAS Testbed Status Report Kaushik De Univ. of Texas at Arlington BNL Workshop, May 2002
Outline • 2 week assessment • Goals • Planning • Work organization • teams • details • recent accomplishments • SC2002: 6 month plan • 12 month plan
Assessment • Testbed Strengths • Excellent package manager • Information service plans ready • Advanced grid portal • Database manager ready • Lots of existing hardware • Experienced people • Testbed Weaknesses • Middleware outdated - Globus 1.1.3 • Waiting for other middleware • No applications, no interfaces • 8 independent sites • Need concrete plans for deployment • Need concrete short term goals
Testbed Goals • Demonstrate success of grid computing model for HEP • in data production • in data access • in data analysis • Develop & deploy grid middleware and applications • layered structure • ease of deployment • Evolve into fully functioning scalable distributed tiered grid
Testbed Plans • UTA Workshop as launch-pad • for testbed middleware upgrade • to identify tasks & organize effort + resources • SC2002 as milestone • demonstrate real working HEP grid applications • demonstrate middleware and tools developed for HEP • component integration • demonstrate inter-operability among experiments
UTA Workshop • http:/heppc1.uta.edu/atlas/workshop_april_2002/ • 21 talks, 8 discussion sessions • 8 page tasklist
Testbed Tasklist • Middleware deployment • OS, Globus, Condor... • Physics application deployment • Information services (MDS) • Middleware development • Data production & access • Integration & testing • Analysis tools • Success must be measured by ease of deployment and usefulness to physicists
Hardware • 8 gatekeepers - ANL, BNL, LBNL, BU, IU, UM, OU, UTA • Farms - BNL, LBNL, IU, UTA • +Multiple R&D gatekeepers • gremlin@bnl - iVDGL GIIS • heppc5@uta - ATLAS GIIS • atlas10/14 - EDG testing • heppc6@uta+bnl - glue schema • heppc17/19 - GRAT devel • @iu - Grappa portal • ? - iVDGL-2 testbed
Fabric Software • Jason Smith, Saul Youssef, KD, Eric Myers • Use kickstart for OS upgrade • Upgrade to RH 7.2 • Pacman to distribute software • First stage deployment • Globus, cernlib • JS & KD joined VDT team last week to facilitate use in ATLAS • Second stage deployment • Magda, GDMP, Condor...
Applications Team • Horst Severini, KD… • Start with Athena-atlfast • afs based package - requires standard ATLAS distribution • Sandbox atlfast - generic site • Build sandboxed DC1 application package • Released GRAT • version 0.1 on 4/12/02 • version 0.2 on 4/22/02 • version 0.3 on 5/7/02
MDS Team • Dantong Yu, Patrick McGuigan, KD, Nurcan Ozturk • publish BNL acas information • hierarchical GIIS server • pacman information provider • GridView upgrade • Glue schema testbed • iVDGL GIIS server
Middleware and Application Teams • Pacman - Saul Youssef • Grappa - Shava Smallen • Magda - Wensheng Deng • Gripe - Rob Gardner • GridView - Patrick McGuigan • GridExpert - Mark Sosebee • Analysis tools - Horst Severini • ...
Integration Teams • EDG - Ed May, Jerry G. • Virtual Data - Sasha Vaniachin, Pavel Nevski,… • ATLAS distributions - Alex Undrus, Shane Canon, Iwona Sakrejda • Networking - Shawn McKee, Rob Gardner • Data management - Wensheng Deng, Ed May, David Malon • CAS, ...
SC2002 Plans • ATLAS-CMS demo (FNAL/SLAC) • Rick Cavanaugh & KD • preliminary schedule agreed • ATLAS users have access to CMS sites • atlfast running at CMS sites • Monitoring demo (BNL) • Rich Baker & Dantong Yu • conceptual plan agreed • iVDGL-2 demo • Rob Gardner & Ruth Pordes • plan under discussion • Grappa demo (IU/ANL) • Magda/testbed demo
