Her Early Life • Born 1887 in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin • Died in 1986 at the age of 98 in Santa Fe, New Mexico • Through her mother, she was a descendant of a Mayflower passenger and signer of Mayflower compact. • One of 7 children • Did well in art as a child and parents encouraged her to attend an art college. • Between 1905 and 1909 attended art schools in Chicago and New York city and worked as a commercial artist in Chicago.

Her Early Career • In 1910 she became and elementary school art teacher in Texas which left little time for painting. • In 1915 she took a job teaching at a South Carolina college and found time to begin painting watercolors which were inspired by the landscapes of Texas. • A friend showed some of her drawings to gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz, who considered them the purest, finest, sincerest things that had entered his gallery in a long while. • He exhibited her work and eventually O’Keefe and Stieglitz married in 1924.

Her Work • One of the few women artists to have an influence on the art world. • Brought an American style to Europe at a time when most of art flowed in the opposite direction. • Did paintings of flowers, rocks, shells, animal bones and landscapes. • By 1920 her work shifted from watercolor to oil. Began doing large scale paintings of natural forms as if seen through a magnifying lens.
