  1. Background • Several attempts were made to establish Marine Protected Areas • Sandy Point dive sites • Nevis • Proposal for a Management Plan for the Development of Marine Protected Areas in St. Kitts(1998) ….this has been the most comprehensive one.

  2. Legislation • NCEPAThe National Conservation and Environment Protection Act, (NCEPA) No.5 of 1987 provides for the establishment of National Parks. • Fisheries ActThe Fisheries Act No.4 of 1984 provides for the establishment of Fishing Priority Areas and Marine Reserves.

  3. The 1998 proposal • Prior to proposal, stake-holder consultations were held. • The proposal listed management areas as • 1. Marine Reserves (includes dive sites) • 2. yachts mooring areas • 3. fishing areas

  4. Demarcation • Each area was mapped ..for example…….

  5. South East Peninsula

  6. Marine Reserves

  7. Other • Institutional arrangements and responsibilities were developed. • Budget created.

  8. What happened? • Proposal submitted and got verbal acceptance • No real follow up……

  9. 2006 • Ministry of Tourism Initiative • Fisheries Dept. was requested to provide technical guidance. • Taskforce/Committee set up to prepare proposal and provide the necessary advice etc. to Min. of Tourism. • Taskforce is chaired by Fisheries (Joe Simmonds)

  10. What has been done so far? • Taskforce prepared TOR • Will build upon what has already been done • Will be Marine management areas • Compilation of available related material • Technical Assistance from CORAL allianceand Ocean Foundation

  11. Why am I here? • TO SHARE OUR EXPERIENCE IN TRYING TO ESTABLISH SUCH AREAS AND SEEK GUIDANCE AND POSSIBLE AREAS OF COOPERATION THAT WOULD ASSIST US IN ACHIEVING OUR GOALS.
