  1. Basic Expository Writing A One-paragraph essay

  2. Expository Writing • For our purpose, and expository essay is one that describes or explains something. • It can also put forth an idea and justify it with examples.

  3. Write a one-paragraph essay. Your prompt is: name your favorite place to visit and explain why.

  4. Organize your thoughts • Did you make a graphic organizer? • What are the odds that the right ideas will appear for you in the perfect order? • You can have a formal graphic organizer, or just a simple list of ideas.

  5. Your Essay Should Contain: • A clear, concise, and defined thesis statement that occurs in the first paragraph of the essay. • Clear and logical transitions between the introduction, body, and conclusion. • Body paragraphs that include evidential support. • A bit of creativity! • A conclusion that does not simply restate the thesis, but readdresses it in light of the evidence provided. • Source: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/685/02/

  6. Favorite place to visit ideas • NYC • Restaurants • Museums • Architecture • Broadway theatre • Sight-seeing • Central Park

  7. NYC • Restaurants • Museums • Broadway Theatre

  8. Basic Essay • My favorite place to visit is New York City. One thing I like about it is the variety of restaurants. Another thing I like is the great number of museums, from modern art to culture and history. Finally, there is the theatre district on Broadway, with some of the greatest live entertainment in the world. This is why New York City is my favorite place to visit.

  9. Taking a Closer Look • Was there a “grabber”? • Can you identify the thesis? • What evidence was offered to support the thesis? • How many examples? • Where was the conclusion?

  10. A Slightly More Interesting Essay • As soon as climb up out of the subway, I know that I’m standing in the capital of the world. I can have all-you-can-eat sushi at IchiUmi, steaks at Sardi’s, or hop a cab to ChurriscariaPlataforma for the finest Brazilian food in America. A quick walk around the block, and I’m on Broadway, where I’ve seen Hugh Jackman, Melina Kanakaredes, and Pee-Wee Herman on stage. Minutes later, I can be inside an Egyptian temple, look at 16th century German armor, or stand in front of a painting that was touched by the hand of Vincent Van Gogh at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The only place in the world that I can do all these things in a single afternoon is New York City, my very favorite place to visit.

  11. Taking a Closer Look • Was there a “grabber”? • Can you identify the thesis? Where was it? • What evidence was offered to support the thesis? • How many examples? • Where was the conclusion? • Which essay did you find more interesting?

  12. What If I can’t think of 3 examples? • 2 good examples (or even 1 great one) beats 3 poor examples. • If you only have one good example, blow it up! • How? Expand on your one idea, and explore different components.

  13. For example, if food is your only idea: • As soon as climb up out of the subway, I’m greeted by the smell of diverse cooking styles mingling in the air, and I know that I’m standing in the culinary capital of the world. I can have all-you-can-eat sushi at IchiUmi, steaks at Sardi’s, or hop a cab to ChurriscariaPlataforma for the finest Brazilian food in America. Some of the greatest chefs in the world like Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, and MasaharuMorimoto all have restaurants here. I could even study cooking at one of the finest schools in the world. The only place in the world that offers all of this is New York City, my very favorite place to visit.

  14. Time For a Re-Write • Revision is part of writing • Re-Write your essay, keeping in mind the elements we have discussed. • How does the new essay compare to the first one?
